In deer language what does a grunt mean?

It really has several meanings. Some are like you saying hey to your buddies. It is a contact grunt. Tending grunt is basically saying hold still so I can climb up on your back. Some are more like bawls that are more used when they are aggravated in hot pursuit.  Just my take on it, hope it helps. By the way does grunt too and are usually social in nature.

I heard a deer grunt yesterday morning while hunting, the deer grunted twice, each grunt lasting about 1 full second with 1 second between each grunt. I never saw the deer. What are your thoughts? Thanks for the help fellas.
