My Greatest Game
« on: November 09, 2016, 10:17:00 PM »
Some here may recall Michael Jordan's performance in the 1997 NBA Finals now dubbed "The Flu Game". This is considered by some to be one of the greatest individual performances in all of sports. What follows is my contrived, convoluted attempt at similarity on a "working man's" stage.

Three days ago I succumbed to the viral onslaught within our home, surely ushered through our doors by the youngest of my 3 children. Coincidentally, a poor Trojan performance is responsible for his life-if you catch my drift. My amateur diagnosis suggests either influenza or the Bubonic plague...I'm struggling to differentiate.

I allowed myself 14 hours of concerted recuperation before the faint whisperings at the edge of consciousness, carrying promises of fantastic displays of the primal rituals of my beloved whitetails, beckoned me into the woods once more.

To be continued tomorrow...(residual fever chills render clear thoughts and precise typing difficult)

Poor decisions: I wield these as Rembrandt  wielded his paintbrush. They have haunted me and brought me joy in equal measure. They've shaped me for better or worse.

I embody the phrase "jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none". I feature no talent not firmly rooted in mediocrity. I do, however, have bulldog tenacity and what has been described as an addictive personality. Any lost time in the woods from Halloween to Thanksgiving is a grievous assault to my overall well-being.

To those only interested in my drivel if a "hero shot" is forthcoming: You may stop reading here. At the time of this writing no whitetail has been harmed. I do hold out hope, however far it may be removed from reality.

My motivation for penning (typing, I suppose) these ruminations was my learning of the passing of Dean Torges.

Although I never met the man, nor communicated with him, through his writings I came to admire him and marvel at his skill with the written word.

I have exhaustively read every story and blog post on his website. He may well be the greatest outdoor writer of our time.

For too long I have written down my thoughts and experiences and shared them too sparingly. Partially because I am insecure in the knowledge I am uneducated and untrained, partially because I hoped to one day have them published, and otherwise because I was selfish.

The Internet is a double-edged sword. Without it I may never have come to know Mr. Torges. And without it I would never have learned of his passing. When thoughts drifted to him, I would have only imagined him expertly stalking his token squirrel or happily laboring over one of his beloved selfbows.

Far to often we as humans focus solely on the end game and not the makings of the memories, the journey.

If my life, that I have lived to this point was only measured in the defines of what some have called "success" I would be woefully inadequate!

Carry on Dustin, and spin another tale in honor of Mr. Torges
Everything I have and have become is due to the Lord and his great mercy.
