Skull mount
« on: November 14, 2016, 03:46:00 PM »
I got lucky and killed a nice 8 point on Friday last week. The third nice buck in 3 years on my little 10 acre triangle woods in southern Illinois.

I wasn't going to have him mounted, so I decided to try and boil the skull and clean it up that way.

I got everything off that I could, and boiled the skull for about 1 1/2 hours at low boil. I then pressure washed most of the tissue off, and scraped the rest off. I wiped the bone down with peroxide and set in the sun to dry.

Turned out good and is a natural white.

I'll add a picture a sap.

Dandy buck Chuck! Congratulations. I really am liking European mounts.

Looks great!

I love a good skull mount like that... especially when the antlers are darker like that one!

Thanks for sharing.

How did you get the nose cartilage out so well?

Boiling and cleaning the skull was less work than I thought. I was able to get it done between bow making jobs during the day.

It only cost me one bottle of gas and a couple hours of work. Looks much better than a skull plate, board mount. I'll probably do the next one this way also.

This buck was too good to just nail on the shop wall. He will make the P&Y book and that's a big deal in my hunting area.

Shadow hunter, the cartilage came out easily with the pressure washer and needle nose pliers. I used a couple squirts of Dawn dishwashing liquid in the water, and that might have helped.
