Dad's arrow went into the deer low and in front of the shoulder near the brisket area. Since the deer turned as he shot, the deer's body was quartering to. We were hoping From the angle that the arrow would have at least clipped the heart but it did not. As best as Dad could tell, the buck died from blood loss. Hope this better explains shot placement.

Thanks for sharing the story, Caley, and congratulations on a great buck, Dave. Sometimes things don't work out the way we planned, but, to your credit, you stuck with it and never gave up. That is something to be proud of.

Great story! Glad your dad got the deer, that had to be a huge relief. It's a shame that the coyotes got to the meat, but there's no way to avoid it sometimes. Congrats to your dad!

Thanks for the follow up KSCATTRAPR....that makes sense. I shot a young deer and the deer spun toward me at the shot...went in front of left shoulder and broke right shoulder upon exit.....never pierced the chest cavity....I gave the deer extra time and recovered it...blood loss killed that deer also.
Good for Dad sticking with it and recovering it....not perfect but such is life.

Congrats to your dad for not giving up. You are right, sometimes even with a fatal shot if the blood doesn't hit the ground and the animal is strong you might not find them. It sucks but that just happens sometimes. Glad he found him and nothing is wasted in nature.

Great buck. So happy your dad was persistent and has closure. Most guys would have given up when the blood ran out. Congrats and well done.
