I had a friend over to hunt a couple days ago, and didn't see anything come into the food plot during daylight, but thought I heard deer in the drainage to the east just before dark.  I decided to hunt that drainage tonight.  With the wind out of the NW, it would be dicey, but I headed to the SW portion of the drainage and settled  in from of an oak tree on the bank, wearing my bush-in-a-bag.  I have one that is a little lighter in color than most that works pretty good in the oak leaves.

I settled in, and wasn't seeing anything other than squirrels, but as dusk approached, the wind died and started to swirl, making the odds of success go down a bit.

It wasn't long before I heard some ruckus to the South followed by slow but steady steps.  I figured a deer had hopped the fence and was heading towards the drainage.  Before long I saw a good buck enter from the SE edge of the drainage and head North. This would put the wind in my favor, but he got stiff-legged and stopped for a second, them slowly turned towards me to head back south.  Not good, and in seconds he would have my wind.

I slowly drew  on him and tried to time.mu shot for when he hit broadside, but was a little early and he was slightly quartering to me, but even though I was using a 51#@29.5" silvertip recurve with 3 blade BPA head, it had no trouble busting through the scapula and into the goodies.  I only knew that for sure later, because on the impact I heard the light crack of bone, and he  continued his turn to head back north into the drainage.

I heard him crash in around 60 yards, thrash some, then was still.  I wasn't 100 percent sure, but I found him right where I thought he would be.

This is actually a real big bodied buck for around here.  I have pics of this buck at night, and planned on passing on him because of all of the broke tines, but seeing the good mass and that he was prob 5.5 years old, I decided to take him.  Actually my best trad buck so far.

That's a nice one, Pat!

Congrats,

Not positive, but I am pretty sure this was him in velvet. That tall guy behind him I have named Stickers, and he is still alive, but I doubt I will get a chance at him now that season is almost over.
