Whats going on with my bow?
« on: January 17, 2017, 06:05:00 PM »

This bow is 6 months old.  This marks in the fiber glass have gradually gotten bigger and bigger and I'm pretty sure I can hear clicking and cracking when I draw the bow.  I shoot this bow very well and took two deer with it...I do not want it to break.

I shoot 12gpp arrows and take care of my equipment.  I'm very worried.

Anyone know what is going on?

At a glance it looks like the glass is lifting.  Can you see any separation from the side?

I'd stop shooting it immediately and get in contact with the bowyer.  Better to have him look at it now before a total failure that could possibly look like a dry fire.

Yep.  The glass is lifting.  Probably due to starved glue and/or water/humidity getting under the glass.

I have never encountered this before. I did that as well, however...since this is a trad archery site it would make sense to get help and information here with like minded individuals who may have seen this.

I would advise not shooting it anymore till the Bowyer looks at it.

I have had a bow blowup that had the tale tell creak cracking sound when drawn. It could cause you some injury potentially if it blows.I heard one make a sound and did not think much of it and on the next shot it blew.

Yup be careful with that. Having a bow blow up is no fun trust me. That doesn't look safe. If you EVER hear a crack noise stop shooting immediately with any bow.

Yep, I'd say she is toast. I had one with a dime size spot at fade, it grew to nickel size and blew with no warning noise. I was the bowyer so I didn't have to ask about it.

Even if you aren't injured it don't help your shooting for awhile. Makes you gun shy.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I am confident that the bowyer will want to see the bow, and that he will want to make it right with you. These things do happen to hand-made bows and identifying it early and getting it fixed is the right thing to do.

Nearly all bowyers here stand behind their work 100%. So contact the bowyer. And, by all means, unstring it. There is no reason to risk injury by using the bow at this point.

These things happen. Could be human error moisture or any number of things. Bowyer should take care of it.

The focus of the pic could be better, but it looks to me like the lam under the glass is a curly wood.  Possibly during the lam grinding process the differential in hardness of the curls created minor dips in the lam.  That might have led to a poor glue joint.

Just a SWAG!

Being up in the fade like that any Bowyer worth there salt would want to refund or replace, if you bought it new from them with in 6 months to at least a year. Looks like it could be due to a few different things, moisture content, a little oily residue, even a bad mix of epoxy, ect. happens to even the best.
