Who would you hunt with?
« on: January 26, 2007, 04:26:00 AM »
I was bored at work tonight and got to thinking of all the bow hunters past and present I'd love to hunt with.  So name three hunters, past or present, you'd like to share a remote camp with for a week or so.

John Rook(he's blind), Biggie Hoffman(he's, ummm, Big! and he takes a joke), and Ed Ashby(He's killed more game than anyone I can imagine with a bow). All three for distinctly different reasons and completely different personalities. They are all so distinct in their composition. All three great hunters who all have heart! CK

I'd like to have one more hunt with my dad, (he's laid-up in an old folks home and only gets to hunt in his mind these days); 2. the brother I never had. 3. Finally, based upon the message delivered in the movie called Primal Dreams, I'd like to have the privilege of hunting with the Wensel brothers.  Their concept of only taking of the excess of the land sits well in my soul.

My father who I took on his last hunting trip before he passed in 1981. My brother who I look forward to sharing camp with every year. Ted Nugent, even though he hunts with wheels, I would love to share camp with him.

1. My dad cause we have never took a hunting trip together YET  2. Norm Blaker and  3. Ron LaClair because I have always looked up to these guys ever since I saw them shoot ASPRIN out of the air at an outdoor fair in Houghton Lake Michigan when I was just a young kid.  That is a great memory from my childhood.

Well if you hunt with either the Westvang's or the Otto's, you'll eat good. I'd like to sit around a fire and listen to Torges and the Wensel's carry on a conversation. I have shared a fire with many others here, including John Rook (Even though it wasn't during a hunt) and I'm better off for it. A hunt would be great.

Well, I am reading Fred Bear’s field notes (3rd time) so I would say Fred and Glen St Charles with out batting an eye. I hunted the Brooks Range last year, which was an area Glen hunted in I think 1957 just before the Little Delta hunt.

My grandfather never shot a deer but always wanted to. I would have loved to take him along to deer camp with my dad, uncle and cousins. I joined my uncles annual/biannual (depends) deer camp about 5 years ago. Our grandfather died in 1991, I started bow hunting in 1996 and harvested my first deer in 1998. He would have been proud of me and he would be glad to see us keeping the family tight by our deer camp reunions.

I have a couple other good hunting partners now. My friend Bob Tastsides (Yeager on LW) and I hunt together a lot. Fred Kasch is a guy I would like to hunt with more, I think it is basically up to me and my invitations. Fred is 93 or 94 now and a great guy, in great shape. We hunted in 2005 and I harvested my first Trad deer. Last year was a good hunting year but for some reason we did not hunt together. I hope we get our signals straight this year so we can have a few hunts together.

I have posted this picture before but I want to share my buddy Fred w/you:

The one hunting buddy, I forgot to also mention is my dog Robbie. Typically, he goes to my place in WI when ever I hunt, so he is someone I like to hunt with too... LOL he sits at camp, does not get out much.

Long answer but Mr Bear and Mr St Charles are at the TOP of my wish list. Would have been tough to make the 1957-58 Little Delta hunts and the 1959 hunt I was 3 months old.....    ;)

Based on that and that they already had a "Bill Wright" on that hunt, I am not sure I could have gone.    :D

Regards,
Bill

1. My wife when she takes her first shot at her first trad deer.

2. My Dad who I've only hunted with once before.

3. Dale Dye, after speaking with him on the phone several times, he seems like my kind of people. I think he'd be a hoot to hang out with..

Anyone who can appreciate the hunt for what it is and enjoy all the aspects that are involved.  I treasure ethics, a positive outlook, an appreciation of game we are after and the country we are in.
Most Trad Gangers qualify, and I would love to hunt with as many as I can!

It's kind of hard to narrow down but I am like BillW, Glenn St.Charles and Fred Bear are definates.  I have some good friends, including my father, whom I love sharing a camp with.  But Paul Schafer, Jay Massey, Art Young, Monty Browning, just to name a few.  I guess it would depend on the day.

I've been fortunate to hunt with my dad every year since 1966. I could pick alot of tradgangers to hunt with as they are top notch and hope to in the future. But if I could pick just one from the past taht everybody knows and that would have to be Ishi...
