Had a blast tonight!
« on: October 29, 2007, 10:07:00 PM »
Arrived at my stand at 4:30 this afternoon looking forward to a relaxing time.  Cool temps moved in about a week ago and this is the first time I've had a chance to hunt in 2 weeks.  Anyway, I've been on stand maybe 20 minutes when I hear deer coming through the woods behind me. It's thick back there but I finally see a doe and her yearling being harrassed by a spike.  Just when I think they will come my way they fade back into the cut over woods.  Several minutes pass and then I think I hear them coming back.  Sure enough,  there's a doe coming right at me about 50 yards out.  Behind her are 5 more slick heads.  This looks promising as there is an entry point into the cornfield 15 yards to my right and another gap in the fence 20 yards to my left.  The slight wind is from them to me so all looks good.  The lead doe decides to go to my right and heads not to the afore mentioned crossing but about 35 yards down the fence.  That's way out of my range and she jumps the fence into the cut cornfield.  The remaining five are intent on joining her.  Four are out of my range but the last deer is coming by at about 15 yards.  She stops, sticks her left foot far forward and leans out to nibble some honeysuckle.  Just then I start my draw.  I have to shoot between 2 pin oaks to hit her vitals.  There's only about a 12 inch gap so it's kill or hit a tree so I pick a spot and just as I get to anchor one of the other does sees me move and jumped sideways.  I've already dropped the string and my doe steps straight back and pulls her head up just as the arrow passes her briskit.  They all head back into the woods and the doe in the cornfied jumps back over to join them.  I give them a loud mouth bleat and they all stop and look around.  They continued to feed and mill around but never would come back in range.  Finally, they hook around behind me and out of sight in the brush.  Fifteen minutes later and I hear deer again.  There are 3 does now heading to the crossing to my left.  I'm fairly well hidden in a pin oak so I'll shoot the first one that makes it to the cornfield while the others won't be able to see me.  The lead doe is very tentative and waits several minutes before easing out in front of me at about 15 yards.  She turns and looks the other way and that was all I needed to come to full draw and pick a spot.  The arrow is away cleanly and looks perfect.  Even though I've seen it before it never ceases to amaze me.  She dropped 10 inches in the blink of an eye and my arrow passed directly over her back by about 2 inches.  She bolts out into the field about 35 yards and stops.  I ease my last arrow onto the string.  DID I MENTION I ONLY HAD 3 ARROWS.  That's becoming more important.  The other 2 does are still standing to my left looking at the doe in the field and none of them know what just happened.  The second doe now enters the field and she's got her eye on something.  It's my arrow.  She saw it hit the dirt and is curious about it.  When her nose gets about 3 inches from the fletching she losses it and joins the 1st doe out in the field.  About 30 seconds later the last doe comes into view about 20 yards away.  I decided then to try to shoot at the bottom of her chest in case she jumps the string.  I hit full draw and she is perfectly broadside and still.  The string slipped my fingers and this time the deer never moved until my arrow went 5 inches under her chest.  She went nuts and ran out to join her buddies.  They all had a little foot stomping party and then decided to come back and see what was up.  That would have been great but I am now out of ammo.  After about 2 minutes it becomes painfully apparent that they have no intention of leaving.  I snorted at them and that was all it took to send them to the other end of the field.  Now to fetch me a projectile.  I unhook my harness and leave my bow on my seat in the stand.  I slowly ease down the ladder, lightly touch down and turn carefully around to see a small buck about 90 yards away staring a hole in me.  Great, now no arrow, no bow and a buck.  I decide to do the only reasonable thing.  I dropped to hands and knees and deer walked to my first arrow.  Then I deer walked back while occasionally wagging my white fletching at the still puzzled buck.  I can only imagine how ridiculous this looked but it seemed to work.  He didn't come my way but he didn't run off either.  Unfortunatlely, he was the last deer I saw this evening as light quickly faded and I found myself retrieving arrows and heading home for supper.  When I got in the boys said I should have hunted on the back deck as there was a deer in the garden.  I told them it wouldn't have mattered as I could not have hit it anyway.  LOL.  Oh well.  I got 3 good shots tonight.  2 of them went right where I was looking but the deer were no longer there.  One of them I flat shot under.  I can't remember the last time I had that much fun.  Good luck to you all and take plenty of arraaas.     ;)

I gotta tell ya man, I would pay good money to see you walking on all fours with a white fletched arra for a tail, hahahahaha.  I almost spilled my coffee reading this.  Great story.
"Every man's life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another." Ernest Hemingway
