Adding writing to a bow - how do I protect?
« on: January 27, 2017, 09:50:00 PM »
I'm wanting to add some writing to a bow that I'm gifting someone.  My question is what should I use (paint, art marker, etc.?) and how do I protect it to ensure it stays put?

A fine point permnant sharpie should work. My guess would be it will hold up good as long as it is in a spot that is not bothered. Clean the area with alcohol first.

Once the writing is dry, add a thin coat of TruOil over it by wiping on with just wet paper towel and immediately completely wiping off.  It will blend in with whatever finish is on bow. Repeat as needed to protect writing.

Or, give it a few very light, quick coats of spray varnish.

Do be careful.  One time, I was making a a dozen arrows.  I spined and weighed them, and marked those numbers on the shafts with a permanent marker.  Then for some reason, I decided to put another coat of clear finish on the shafts before I fletched them.  That caused the permanent marker to run, and I ended up with a mess.  I covered up the mess with a broad cresting band, which looked odd, but better than the smeary writing.  I still have one or two of them left, which are too ugly to die, I guess.

Yep anything sprayed over the permant marker that is hotter will make it run if too much is put on at once. Very light fogging cure and hit it at least two more fogging curing each time. You should be fine.True oil may be the safest way.

India ink. You can get it at an art store. As long as it's completely dry, I haven't found anything that will make it "run".

Will the true oil blend in with a satin finish if used as described above?

Industrial sharpie is the easiest if doing black. Won't fade or run.

Satin water based poly.  It won't harm anything under it.
