A word of warning, if you start messing around with longbows you may end up needing to change your handle!

Ever think about making your own longbow? It's not too difficult to get started and nothing is more rewarding than shooting your own bow, made by your hands.
Even if it's a slouch that won't cast an arrow past 50 yards there will be nothing like shooting something you made.
Some of the all wooden bows guys are making are right up there with the high end glass laminates in terms of arrow speed.
Just something to think about.

Build your own. Mine aren't pretty or fast but they charm me more than anything else I could buy.

For your first longbow, you would probably do better to look for something used at a quarter or third the price. It's going to take you a while to find out the kind of longbow you like best -- hybrid, mild r/d, straight, etc. -- pistol grip, straight grip, etc.
If you plunk down $1200 for a new bow and find you don't like it, you're going to lose $400-$500 a few weeks/months later when you try to sell it.
