Time for Breakfast!

Winter has been brutal this year in Idaho,just having breakfast and thought I'd share my view!

 Haven't seen much around my place except the occasional moose.
 Sure glad the warmer temps are coming.
 Got a few coyotes that I need to address.

complete southerner here, but, the grass doesn't die with all the snow on it?  


Do you try to add any type of feed to help them make it through the year?

I started feeding them(two) just before Christmas and now the group has grown to Fourteen cows! the word gets out quick when premium Alfalfa is being put out,ha!

  This year the snow pack is 200% of average and over 10' deep at 9,000',my house is about 6k.
The deer unfortunately are not doing well and there will be a high winter kill,the Elk are fairing better but are still having a tough time.
Fish & Game has set up feeding stations throughout our valley to help them out.

Curt. Have booked an elk hunt with Weitas Creek Outfitters for basically the first week of September. Are you in that area, Kamiah, by any chance? And if so, what do you think about my chances? I'm coming out with two wheelie bow pals.

I'm in Hailey which is quite a bit south of where you are going.I don't think they have gotten nearly the amount of snow we have so you should be fine.Good Luck!

Fish and game is helping out.......unheard of here. Our F&G stopped folks from feeding deer, said it was unhealthy for them. It appears it was better to let them starve in the deer yards.

Ron,we are not suppose to feed them but this winter is not like any we've had for close to 50yrs,the animals really need our help.
  I called F&G because a sick Elk had to be put down,he saw what I was doing and never said a word but they are ticketing other people in the valley.
 The Deer here will have a high die off because they don't do well around people and tend to keep to themselves until it's too late.

I hunted elk north of McCall a few years ago, I didn't get one but it was great !

Yes,the Mule Deer are having an extremely bad winter.
Traditionally they migrate 20-40 miles to the south but the previous mild winters have made them accustomed to staying locally which will result in a high winter kill.The Mule deer also don't respond to feeding stations like Elk do and will avoid human interaction until it's too late.

highlow...plenty of snow down there too...long cold winter but the elk will survive like allways...enjoy ur hunt and buy a wolf tag !!!
