Reflective tape on back of arrow a good idea?
« on: March 10, 2017, 10:11:00 AM »
I like the idea of putting reflective tape on the very back of the arrow shaft. (between the feathers and nock)

But  I have read on here how you want the least amount of weight on the back as possible....So, If I would put tape on the back would it:

1. Mess up the tune of the arrow?
2. Would the weight give it a greater chance of cork screwing or mess         up the flight of the arrow?

or does some change that small not really matter?

Adding weight to the back would make the arrow show stiffer but I don't know if that small amount of tape would make a difference, one way to find out   :coffee:

If that amount of tape (1 to 2 grains) affects the tune, you're not tuned very well to begin with. Don't worry about it.

In regard to your questions, my own experience is "no" to each. Of course I only have used tape about 3/8" wide.  Just enough to reflect well.

I just weighed a piece of reflective tape of about the size you would need to put a 1/2" wrap on the back of an arrow.  It weighed 1 1/2 grains.  If you weighed all your nocks, you would probably find a greater variation in weight than that.  Ditto your shafts, glue, feathers, inserts, etc.  Don't worry about it; it will get lost in the background noise.

It won't hurt at all. If that was the case adding dips and cresting will screw up your spine and that's not true either. I tested that theory because I make custom arrows. I peeled off a full dip with the sealer and it weighed about 19 grains. I double checked my bare shaft flight with and without it and also through paper and it made no difference at all.

I use a fletch cover and that fixes that particular problem. Love the way the flashlight beam picks up the shine from 100 yards away.

Unless you can Robin Hood arrows at 100 yards every time, that little piece of tape is not going to EVER make any difference in your tune. You are over thinking this idea.

Not going to effect any tuning. If you think it still will, then offset the "nock end tape" with another piece of tape behind the broadhead.

I've been putting a 1" piece on both end for many years, helps to find those expensive broadheads back, if your arrow gets broke after going through an animal

I use 2 pieces one behind the feathers and one the same size in front of the feathers. Works for me.

I have used a reflective capwrap before.  That really shines when your flashlight hits it.  I think I got them from Braveheart Archery.

No problem here for years ...and with 5 inch chartreuse 4 fletch ....I use a,fletch cover....for several reason...not just to hide the bright part of my arrows.

I doubt any of us shoot well enough to notice that extra weight.  We all probably have enough variation in our draw length from shot to shot that a couple of grains of reflective tape would be undetectable.

one stringer now sells a small reflective piece that fits between fletch and nock, I wished they had a better selection of color but what they have is good
