Arrows.......
« on: March 22, 2017, 07:22:00 PM »
Recently bought myself a Northernmist classic and love the bow. Have always shot easton aluminum arrows primarily with both trad bows as well as training wheels and owned a set of carbons for a short time and liked the carbons over the aluminum arrows. Had given alot of thought to getting some cedars for this bow but just dont know..... curious as to what you prefer to shoot and hunt with and why? Thanks

I love cedar arrows , they have personality and warmth .
I think they love you back as well .

I hunted with cedars for more than 50 years and still do, but carbons are very difficult to beat for durability.  Also, because the shaft is physically a lot lighter than wood, carbons are easy to front load and there's no doubt in my mind that higher FOC increases penetration.

On deer size critters, it really makes little difference.  Most wood arrows will yield pass-throughs if the critter is hit in the right place.  On bigger critters, a front loaded carbon has the penetration advantage.

I shoot woods and carbons out of my ASLs. They both work just fine.  Shoot what you like.

I agree with Graps also.  A Classic bow needs a classic arrow.

I started with wood in 1965. I changed to aluminum in the 1970's. Then on to carbon arrows.

I came back full circle about 10-15 years ago to wood. I do have all three arrows in my garage currently.

I choose to shoot wood arrows when hunting. I do so because the weight is there already, I just put on the broadhead I want. The momentum is there.

When I came back to wood, I started with Sitka Spruce and I liked it very much.  Currently I am using Douglass Fir, because of the weight - that and the fact that Snag has made me a few sets and I love the way they look and fly.

So far, I have killed a bear and deer with wood arrows and they fly as consistent as I need.

I have shot wood, aluminum, and fiberglass. Never tried carbon. I prefer wood, especially with longbows - its just a natural fit.

I just bought some Surewood Doug Firs in their test kit, I got some 60-65 and 65-70 spine with the 9 1/2" back taper.  The 60-65 spines flew great out of my N.M. Baraga and my Whisper.  I got those arrows specifically for those bows and got some lighter spine for my other bows.  My first time with Surewoods, I'm very impressed.
Too many bows to list, and so many more I want to try!  Keep the wind in your face, and your broadheads sharp.

X2 Stickbender.

I always shot POC.  After trying the Surewood DFs, I was really impressed also.

It's interesting to me how with many things in life the pendulum swings way out and then works it's way back in time to where it started. Modern day archery started with wood shafts. Then the pendulum swung out a little and we discovered aluminum.
Then the pendulum swung out further and we were into carbon. There will always be some who stay with those shafts...but a whole new generation of shooters, and guys who used to shoot wood, are re-discovering the great attributes of wood shafts. So on and on the pendulum swings. Enjoy the ride!

Cedar arrows are the easiest woods to work with if you need to taper or straighten one, which is rare. There are much tougher and heavier woods out there. The Douglas Fir on the market today is exceptional and makes great arrows. Anyone who says carbons cant be beat for toughness has not shot any ash, hickory or birch shafts. Ive seen them bounce off impacts that would shatter a carbon arrow. Dont discount wood arrows. They have been working well for a long long time.

I have some Surewood douglas fir done up by Snag that are gorgeous! They also have enough weight that even a noisy bow will quiet down with them. I hunt with wood most of the time, but I do like the improved accuracy of my carbons.

Cedar is easier to work with as far as cutting tapers. They straighten fairly easy too. If this is your first foray with wood I would suggest starting out with cedar.Douglas Fir is said to be stronger, and straighter out of the box, but nothing beats the smell of a dozen new cedars!

I'm an aluminum guy. Reasons, they are the most consistent weight and straightest of the options shaft-to-shaft, spine easy to choose, easy to cut (with a simple tube cutter), just easy to work with. I can easily get good gpi with aluminums also and they just shoot well from my bows.

However, if I change it would be to wood. I also enjoy the look and feel of a wood arrow. I have never warmed up to carbon.
