Stewart bows
« on: March 31, 2017, 05:57:00 PM »
I really like the looks of the grip on his R/D bow. All of the bows on his website loks like they are extremely shiny or glossy. Is that the case? Anybody own or shot his r/d mild longbow?

I've owned four Stewart bows and first of all, they're among the finest made  bows there are. As far as the finish goes, when I order a bow I ask for the hand rubbed (satin) finish. I wanted a hunting finish and not a show piece finish. One of my bows was a three piece slammer. The rest were one piece LS longbows (r/d). IMO, the maple cores shoot as hard as his bamboo limbs. Stewart's r/d longbows are great!

I bought a one piece slammer two years ago and the finish was more dull than shinny.  He does have a tendency to have more or a shinny finish on the 3 pieces.  But Leon will put what ever you want on the bow.

Leon Stewart makes a fantastic longbow.

I am getting older and had to drop down in draw weight. I was using a 53# Recurve made by Owen Jeffery since 1995.

As I spoke with Leon of my concerns, he recommended a 45# draw weight. I was hesitant and doubtful at first. But after shooting at his place for a while, I was sold!

My strict criteria for a bow was it had to have a very smooth draw, zero finger pinch, and very important for me was the bow absolutely positively must be whisper quiet.

I am pleased to report, my R/D has a very smooth draw, has absolutely no finger pinch, and is the ultimate in quietness. The grip feels natural, and fits my hand perfectly.

I cannot stress enough how pleased I am with my Stewart R/D Longbow.

If your are concerned your finish is overly flashy, just apply wax.
Wax will cut any shine. My longbow has a satin type of finish applied, so no need to do anything.

Click on here for pictures of my Stewart R/D longbow.     http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=148959#000000

I drove over to his place and was shooting a few bows he had available in stock.

I left with a real beauty. See above pictures. You will agree.

My personal recommendation and belief, you will be very pleased with your purchase of a Leon Stewart R/D Longbow.

mec, if you knew me personally, you would know I am a curmudgeon, and a SOB. I am not happy, and bitch and complain about everything.

For me to give my blessing on something, believe it to be true.

This man makes quality Longbows.

I am happy with mine.

One was three PC Slammer. The others were the ones that Leon describes as LS Reflex-Deflex longbows on his webpage. There also could have been a one pc slammer thrown into the mix, which was a used bow I purchased.

Craig,
Leon's Slammer is right up there with the best of the best.  My original benchmark bow.  They are fast and above all, quiet.  His standard grip is to me right about the perfect longbow grip.

For top performance and smoothness I'd go with a Slammer.  His r/d bow is great but to me it's more a choice if you have to have a D shaped bow more than anything.

He can do a flat, satin, or gloss finish on customs.  My Lil Slammer is gloss and it makes the wood just pop, I just rub string wax on the limbs for hunting and wipe it off when I'm done.

I love my Slammers.  The grip is what sold me.  It feels so natural.  Very quiet and smooth.  For me the Slammer was smoother than the r/d bow.  Leon's bows are works of art.

mec,

Please excuse me for adding my pix to your post.

I was only attempting to show you a close up of the actual finish, i.e., not shinny/glossy.

I hope not to sound like paid shill.  But, I sincerely enjoy my bow.

Oh, and thank you all for the positive comments.

Once I shot a Stewart longbow a while back at this stage I have not shot any other longbows (no need) Stewarts are the only bow I have shot that fit the description (once you find the right bow,  you will know it) no need for others. My household has at least 6.

Plan on taking a look at Leon's bows at Denton Hill as well this year. After reading all of the positive comments, it really has me interested.

Jwilliam,

You live in PA. close to his place.

Why not just drive over to his home?

Call him and arrange a quick visit.

Bill,
I'm in the northwest corner of the state. Only about 20 minutes inside the Ohio  state line. So we're basically in complete opposite corners of the state. It's  just shy of a 6 hour drive. Already checked it out on mapquest.   :biglaugh:
