Uncle Barry's Boot Camp
« on: April 06, 2017, 07:17:00 AM »
I attended Week 2 of Barry's Boot Camp. It was as entertaining as it was informative. I was finally able to make it this year after having to back out in 2015.  I was afraid that last years was going to be his last, so I was pretty excited when he announced that he wa doing it again this year. I jumped in as soon a I saw his post.

The weather wasn't ideal but it wasn't terrible. The first day was a class room instruction. I could visualize everything that Barry was pointing out. His organization of his stands, his field notes and his tools, all part of his big picture.  The day actually flew.  The meals were awesome. Some of the best eating that I've had in any hunting Camp. Barry's Wife Susan was running around making sure that we were all well fed.

Even though I drive 24 hours to get to Iowa from NY, I had a hard time sleeping. Day two would have us in the woods. Everything was coming together from Barrys information from the day before.  I think Barry was just as excited about talking about whitetails as we were of hearing it!

I think the highlight for me was watching the footage that Barry and Gene had compiled over the years and hearing the stories of Paul Schafer.

Then the trip to his house at the end with more great stories that I've read about but we're now hearing first hand.

Barry then brought us out see his bows. Here  is UB with One of Paul Schafer's personal bows

I'm amazed at the passion and the excitement about bow hunting Whitetails that Barry still has after all these years. Thank you Barry for sharing the years of knowledge and strategy that you've compiled over a lifetime.

Time well spent, great to see UB out and about. Everytime I'm down around Lineville, I always keep a look out for Gene and Barry.
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;

Hey, where's his Sable?  That's not a planted Sable like everyone today gets, but a wild and free one. Imagine flying to Zimbabwe on Bear Force One with Jack Nicklaus--since it IS Master's week...what an incredible trip and awesome animal. It is amazing that with all those mounts it's just a tiny portion of what Barry has lost in all the fires he has been the victim of over the years.

Ha Steve, I thought I took a picture of it but I was trying to hang on to every word and take pictures at the same time.  Kinda like walking and chewing gum!!  He told the story though!!

Did Barry lose several silver tips made by Paul and
Dave in those fires? I often wondered why Barry never shot any of Daves bows now a days too, along with his tall times and Dale Dye bows?

I made it to week one, priceless information. I've moved every stand I own, and have about 4 new spots on public to test out thanks to what I learned from Barry

A buddy and I attended a boot camp back in '08.Since then I've taken my 2 best bucks ever and my buddy has taken his best buck ever as well.Coincidence? Maybe,but we're glad we went and I filmed a bit of our time in the field and we each have a DVD of it.
