Cleaning paint off bows

What is the best stuff to clean up an old treasure, removing paint and such?

Just finished a 1970 Bear Grizzley, painted black way back when by original owner. This bow had never been shot, but was painted, so it would be available if ever needed. Never was and now I own it. Took all the paint off with Goop Off. Original finish looks great. Not as hard to remove as I thought it would be.

I have used denatured alcohol with a rag that has some texture.  It is slow, but doesn't really take a lot of pressure, just patience.  Goof Off is good stuff, but it scares me - I've seen it degrade a wide range of materials, so I've never used it on a bow.

I took the paint off an old Damon Howatt with Denatured alcohol and 0000 steel wool. I then took  polishing compound and buffed it out. Looked like brand new!
