Drying staves in hot water heater closet
« on: November 01, 2007, 11:25:00 AM »
Hey bowyers.  Have any of you ever tried drying your staves in the hot water heater closet?  I had a few pieces of test hickory (will be testing per TBBI) and they dried from 10% to < 6% in just a few days.  I've never heard of anyone doing this... just tried it on a whim.  do any of you see any problems drying rivercane shafts in there??

Nice idea. I've placed staves on a radiator. Don't know too much about cane. Jawge

I have done that before with great success. Mine used to run about 35% on the guage which dried them nicely.

I too know naught of the cane.
Skeater who?

I keep most of my bows and shoot shafts in the utility room next to the HW heater. That is where I cured the sinewed bows I've made also.   Pat

I put a stave between the hot water heater and the wall once, cracked from back to belly in several places.

My computer has been out for two weeks. Mighty good to be back on line.

OUCH!!  Eric, do you know what the MC was when you started?  I dried this stuff down to ~10-12% and was hoping to finish it off in the hot water heater closet... but i don't want to crack it!!
Thanks, everybody, for the input...
