Now down to 3weeks. Till first bear hunt
« on: May 13, 2017, 05:55:00 PM »
Well getting pretty excited about my up coming bear hunt. I'll be going to Quebec with Jerry Russell guide service. Hopefully it will be a great trip. It will be my first time in Canada also. Anyone has any advice for a first timer feel free to chime in. I'll be taking a couple bows I built. A 52# and a 49# at my draw. I am leaning towards the 49# as of the moment for my go to.     :goldtooth:

Make sure you do not have any firearms or ammunition in your vehicle. If you take bear spray, be sure to tell the border guards you have it.

Thermacell on the list. 10/4 on the bear spray. Never thought of that.

You may want to check regs to take bear spray across the border into Quebec just to be safe.

Best of luck! Keep us posted on your hunt. One day when I'm all grown up I'll have to give Mr. Russell a call and see if I can make myself an expensive rug!

Hey Mike,
Make sure to bring several refill packs for the Thermacell. you will be using it full time. I took a 3/4 head net too. It came in handy because the wind sometimes blows just hard enough to blow your thermacell cloud away but not hard enough to keep the skeeters from gettin ya. Clothing wise be Prepared for a cold front too. We had weather from the 20's to the 80's last year. Don't forget to pick a spot! Good Luck!

I've got just under 3 weeks and I'll be ventureing into Canada for the first time too. And judging by those bows you probably ought to be building them for a living, those look awesome!

Other then what has already been mentioned, I bought a cheap camo outfit at Wal-Mart and treated it with Permethrin.  Someone mentioned that ticks can sometimes be bad.

Oh, and a passport...

Sure is a beautiful evening to do some shooting. Did have to  do some pruning to the bow rack.    :archer:

Brush up on your French and have fun! When I was a kid, I read an article written by an old timer who said that lard from the bear is the absolute best grease for frying doughnuts, See if your camp cook can verify this. Bon chance!

French I don't know about. I have enough trouble with English. Lol

Check tune with some new shafts. Looks good to me. Hopefully the bears agree. Should  have to stitch up two shark bites in the rug.

As for the French, learn one line and you will be fine:

Thermacell but buy your fuel on the other side of border when you pick up your license and bear tag.  I took a headnet but usually the thermacell was more than enough.

always carry a light jacket with you to treestand as it cools off quick once the sun dips behind the trees....

wait on a good shot...dont rush it...be sure it is not a sow with cubs....

enjoy....my first was one of my best hunts ever even without bringing a bear home.  went again two years ago and enjoyed it just as much plus got a huge bear.

be patient, listen to your guides, dont be afraid to ask them to move the bait barrel closer or the stand closer if beyond your comfort range....and just relax.
Keep em sharp,

Have a great time. Thermacell. Rain gear! Patience. BROCK had great points. Bears aren't "tough skinned" killed my first with a 45# bow and a woodsman. But. You the hair on a bear makes them LOOK LARGER than they really are. I've helped trail lots of bears and those suckers can go. I would say sit and observe for a couple days before dropping the string.my first time I shot the first bear that came in. I was happy with that. The second time I didn't shoot till day 4 and I observed quite a few mthey were a blast to watch. Even a GIANT sow with 3 cubs. Have a great time. And good luck!!!
