Stump Shooting: The value of authentic practice

I am a huge fan of shooting stumps. It lets me get into the hunting mindset, and take hunting shots. It also lets me act like a little kid and make believe I am shooting at whatever I can think up. I also get to stretch my effective range and shoot through little gaps.

I took my camera on my stump shoot today. Figured I would share my thoughts and tips with everyone here as you have all given me so much.

Very cool.. Thanks for sharing.. I too like stump shooting the best! I combine shooting/scouting and conditioning all in one, if my imagination really goes some days I actually feel like I am on a real hunt...

most of my small game hunts turn into stumpshooting .I can't seem to pass up a good shot on a leaf or cattail

I can't explain it, but my best shooting is informal stump shooting.

Compounders just can't wrap their heads around stump shooting. If there are no scoring rings or a chance to win something they just don't see the point. Trying to explain the whys and hows seem to confuse them more.

It's a trad thing.

I practice shoot on my way back to the car in the morning in the last open field and in the evening I practice shooting when heading across the first field.  Not going to get a deer there anyway and the warm up is fun and always a good thing.  I warmed up on a pheasant last weekend.  Too much lead, shot 18" in front it.  Next time, I will do better.

I got the camp name "Stumpkiller" because it was thought I liked shooting stumps at mid-day more than deer hunting.

Can't really deny that.      

I still always carry at least one blunt when hunting to keep my eye in.  MUCH better than shooting on cleared lanes at know distances.  

Nothing prettier than an 80 yard arrow flight that connects.

I, too, shoot lots of stumps.  Some look like elk, some moose, some bears, some deer, some............

Best times are in the woods with my sons (18 and 10) stump shooting.  The bale is ok for a few sessions a week but nothing like shooting stumps.  
Like others, I carry a blunt in my quiver for squirrels or grouse or stumps.

I even had a favorite stump in one of my old hunting grounds.  Looked like a boar from four different directions.

I like the way you think. I'm New to read archery and I think I'll be out hunting stumps once deer season closes. I'm from Massena New York,where are you located?

About 15 miles NE of Binghamton.

Keep your eyes peeled for the mostly annual Rockwood Forest Stump Shoot around April.  It's about between us (near Gloversville - west of Albany).  A bunch of us stick bow shooters from NY and even Quebec get together for a great day of stump jabbing.
