For me, I prefer to do the research necessary to hunt public land. If money is not an issue, private land leases are the way to go.

If you're interested in a particular week/month, contact an outfitter. I'm sure they can hook you up.

That is a sad, albeit true, fact.  Private land is the way to go.  Before too long it will be the only way to go, unless you prefer to get a tag just for the sake of wandering around the overcrowded "public" land that the proletariat are permitted to use.  Sometimes I feel that public land hunting will cease to exist in my lifetime.

Sad but true, Brent. I've hunted WI and Illinois public land. It can be crowded. I began hunting the west several years ago where there is more land than hunters. Less cost per acres.

Lots of options out west, kansas and nebraska public isn't like back east!

Every lease I've had was putting boots on the ground and making offers.  That doesn't always mean cash, sometimes a bit a sausage, yard work will work.

I personally don't have an issue paying someone to hunt their land if it keeps it from turning into a subdivision.

Leases: This is a situation where someone pays to rent the land - be it from a farmer, timber company, mining company - it will usually be one of those three although there are some families that own an abundance of land who lease out sections.

Then the guy who pays the rent creates a club

Members pay this guy dues

If done properly the cash flow covers rent - maintenance - projects

Projects might include food plots

My opinion best leases are run by dictatorship

You know if it is a good club if members want to rejoin and non members are asking to get in.

Leasing is probably the best way for the average guy who has an above average passion for hunting to access land, be a participant, manager, steward. I find leasing to be a very excellent part of our hunting program. The only way to get a better situation would be equity membership clubs or owning your own land. Two big subjects distinctly different than leasing.

I see it mentioned here to work with an outfitter if you are only hunting a week - Absolutely True - In fact when folks try to join our hog leases we do not take beginners - for you to appreciate a lease you must go the outfitter route first and in most cases you will be disappointed and see all kinds of things you would have done better - then it is time to actually do it.

You find a lease by asking people you know locally - "who runs a hunting club around here"? - and in other states ask through that states traditional bowhunters organization perhaps run an ad in their magazine.

There are a growing number of companies who look for landowners who want to generate income from a lease.  The companies charge the landowners a fee for advertising, contracts etc.  Just google 'hunting leases' for the state you are interested in hunting.  I think you'll see a number of hits.

Hate to see this personally, but I'm also sympathetic to farmers who want to ease the cost of business by at least recouping property taxes

One thing to watch out far, and I've seen it a couple of times here in SC is guys having clubs and selling a lot more memberships than what they say. Also overstating the acerage So if at all possible talk to members or previous members.
A good lease is hard to find.
