Hagerman Permit!
« on: June 22, 2017, 03:09:00 PM »
My brother and I both drew a Federal Wildlife permit to hunt Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge for deer this November. We have been putting in for 3 yrs trying to get drawn.  Now I have to qualify on a proficiency test.  The test is to shoot 14 3-D targets minimum and have 80% kills 10-8-5 scoring.  5 is wound.  Targets are to be no further than 30 yrds.  Standards for proficiency are a bit high.  I hunted this hunt in 1995.  I was 25 years old and had not taken a deer with my bow.  One of my archery mentors Forrest "Junior" Robertson took this buck on the weekend we were hunting.  Buck of a lifetime.  I believe still the largest non-typical taken with a recurve in Texas.  I so miss Mr. Junior Robertson.
The picture does not do the buck justice on size.  19 points, over 200" nontypical.

Congrats on the permit and efficiency tests are not a bad thing and may be the future. Your friends' buck is quite a buck-certainly a buck of a lifetime. Sorry for the loss of your friend as well. Good luck with the hunt.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

good luck on the test. 30 yards seems a bit far for trad gear, but can be done if you practice at that range.

Should be no problem for an "old" veteran (of the recurve) like yourself    ;)

One of the best things about traditional archery is the overall quality of people involved in it.  Good luck on your hunt.

Good luck. I hunt a military installment here in Virginia when I get drawn for it.  Their proficiency test is 2 out of 3 shots from a treestand must hit a paper plate at 30 yards.  The last time I went, I was the first trad guy ever to qualify.  It can be done, just practice!

Good luck on your hunt!

My brother and I both made the qualification for the hunt with our recurves.  The proficiency test centered around larger targets at 20 yards, most shots at about 15-17 yards.  30 yards was the max.Our range official had a true proficiency test not a tournament competition.
