nock height revelation
« on: June 27, 2017, 04:06:00 PM »
After many hours tinkering with bareshafts and getting stiff results with full length Heritage 75s and 100 grain tips I started paying attention to the occasional smack the arrow gave my bow hand.  My nock height was 9/16" to the bottom of the top nocking point and I had not previously noticed any fletching wear, but decided to move it up a bit.  I set it at 23/32" and my stiff issues disappeared, but the bareshaft impacted, as expected several inches below the fletched shafts.  I shot the nock off of one of my arrows and now I think I may be onto something...
Just to verify I shot a broadhead and it groups with the field points.  I have heard that nock low is generally a bad thing, but that you can get a great tune with the nocking point set higher than dead even bareshaft tune.  Anyhow at this point it seems to have made quite a difference.  Having switched to 3 under several months ago I believe the bow is quieter with the higher nocking point as an added bonus.  Am I on the right the right track?

Are you shooting an ILF bow?  If not, your nock point is very low for 3 under on a bow tillered for split.  I run 5/8" but 3/4 inch is not uncommon.  Keep tinkering and you'll find that sweet spot where it all comes together.

Hi Mike.  It is an rd longbow.  It is at 23/32" (just under 3/4").  Much higher than the 9/16" that i had been using.

Sounds about right for 3 under. When I shot 3 under I had to raise the NP to around 3/4" to get decent arrow flight.
