I think I've got it?
« on: July 04, 2017, 12:56:00 PM »
I've been reading a lot and I'm getting a bit of information overload. Will y'all please help me with arrow selection and other accessories I need to begin? I'm looking for wallet friendly options, as much as that's possible.

I bought a 30lb Samick sage with stringer. I measured my draw at 27" by marking an arrow at the outside edge of the bow. I understand the concept of foc and spine but not sure where I need them. I'm not looking to fine tune until I get proper form and good groups. I do want to start off right and get close.

Is this correct for arrows?
600 spine
125g point
28" length
4" feathers
Aluminum or carbon?

I'm going with a tab and three under to start. Will scrap leather work on the shelf and how do I go about that? I figure double sided tape but probably wrong. Or would I be better off with an elevated rest? My end goal is hunting after I can pull and accurately shoot a 40lb bow. Is there anything I'm forgetting?

Spine is too heavy.  Will more likely need a .800 spine shaft.  You're going to be drawing about 28# at your 27-inch draw length.  If you can find them, I'd suggest 75 or 125 grain points. Otherwise the arrow is going to be rather heavy and slow.

I usually don't worry about feather length, but in this case, I think 4-inch feathers would be better than 5-inch, and three fletch rather than 4 fletch.  The more fletching, the more it slows the arrow, and three 4-inch fletch is plenty for stability.

Carbon or aluminum makes no difference, though carbon will be more durable.  An aluminum in that light spine will bend pretty easily.

My guess is you'll need to cut them shorter than full length to tune them to the bow. 28 inches BOP will probably work if you have to have someone else cut them for you.

Velcro (the fuzzy side) works well for arrow shelf and side plate.

Elevated rest vs shooting off the shelf is a personal preference.  Either will work.  Might save a few bucks initially and shoot off the shelf and see how you like it.

Good luck.

Thank you. I found 600 on a chart, glad I asked first.

I found Fleetwood carbon arrows in an 800 spine. Are those good? I'm having a hard time finding what shafts are offered in 800 because most sites don't have a very good search function. Any arrows that aren't $10 a pop?

my 30lb@28" at my 27"dl came out to be around 27lbs (24lb or so dynamic spine with b50 string, cut to center bow,  according to calculator).

I've shot 31inchs 600spine with 145gr up front, and it kinda sorta works ok, but it is slllooooowww.

I have 1000 spine 28.25 inches with total of 88gr up front (38insert+55point) planned. should be about 7.8gpp, so hopefully it'll give me good cast.

I don't know how it works yet, will find out next week. although spine calculator usually does a good enough job to put me in the ball-park.

You can use 600 spine arrows. You may have to be play with the length and point weight, but they'll work. Stu Miller's spine calculator is a good place to start, but don't assume it's going to be 100%. Other factors looked your form and release will effect your results.

You can use scrap leather for your shelf and sideplate. Barge or contact cement work best for glueing it to the bow as it can be removed easily. For the sideplate the thinner the better as this will effect the distance from center.
