This is the first GLLI in Marshal in 1985. That's my canvas screen in the background that we used as a backstop for shooting aerial targets.

My first GLLI was 1986 or 1987 in Marshall. First time I ever drew a 100# bow (I had used to shoot an 86# Howard Hill bow a few years earlier). That was Denny Sturgis, Jr.'s Kolometz bow.  Now my heaviest bow is 57# Hill Tembo!!  This was the era I started shooting Robertson Mystical longbows, one I bought from Ron as a stock bow and one that he was selling for Denny Sturgis, Sr. It was an exciting time for those of us who were still shooting traditional. Vendors were coming back on board and Traditional Bowhunter Magazine launched a few years later. There are bigger shoots now, but the GLLI was the primer that really got things going in the mid 80's.

That picture from Marshall sure brings back a flood of nostalgia.  That shoot just had a special feel to me.

David, yes, there was just flat out excitement in the air of having such an event with like minded archers in that era. It was the first time I ever saw someone making a sinew backed osage bow. Gary Davis was doing a demonstration off to the side of the vendors and it was just eye opening as were the world of items available to us. This was before internet and before Traditional Bow Hunter magazine, so advertising had no real venue, but there were vendors there with there wares.

Anyone remember the canoe shoot at the GLLI in Marshall?

Yes, the canoe shoot and the standing Bear across the pond were great! I really liked the targets with the vitals inside so you couldn't see them for scoring until after you shot and walked up to the targets. A friend and I would drive all night going through Chicago about midnight to get there. I believe we went in 86,87 and 88.

For sure kids can shoot the 3D course with recurves, but longbows only for adults. As far as kids competitions, you'll have to check with one of the board members or ask when you get there.
