Whitetail Bucks
« on: July 23, 2017, 12:41:00 PM »
It doesn't take much scouting skill to find these bucks. The field is sainfoin and they camp in it 24/7,all Summer long. There were about 35 bucks in this group and some scattered stragglers in other parts of the field. There are some other whitetails, mulies and elk, bedding in the hills outside the field. Those are vulnerable to lions. All the big bucks stay in the field.

When the season comes in,they will break up and some will bed in the foothills. The ones that stay in the sainfoin are virtually unhuntable. The field is 1 mile by 1/2 mile and no cover. They much prefer the sainfoin over alfalfa.

I jumped this one out of the high grass around the edge of the field.

Wow! Some real good ones out there. I hunted Fort Peck the first year it opened to bowhunting (many years ago). We we after mulies as we had been snowed out of the Gravely range hunting elk.

Those pictures remind me of that hunt. We saw many huge mulie bucks, but it was tough hunting the, mostly open, terrain.

Nice pics, thanks for posting!

Nice pictures! Thanks for sharing. I love to scout my spots by watching food sources in the afternoon.

Wow, excellent.
Great pix.

Hadn't heard of Sainfoin before now. Looks like they love it. Hard to fathom that many bucks in one place compared to populations here.

One of the reasons I always dream of coming to Montana....Problem is I'd probably never leave...If that's even considered a problem!
