Tuning Troubles
« on: July 28, 2017, 07:05:00 AM »
Hello, as a new shooter of the traditional bow, I'm running into a tuning issue.  I've dialed in my bare shafts laterally, but no matter what I do or how I adjust my nock, my bare shafts angle down and hit low.  Any ideas how to fix that?

My specs:

Bow: #50 bear grizzly (I have a 29-30" draw) with a fast flight string

Arrow: full length GT trad 400 with 150gr tip with 50gr weight behind the 15gr insert (215gr up front in total)

First, I'll ask the obvious question.  Are you shooting down at at your target or is it at eye level?

If that's not it, could still be your nock point.  If it's too low, the arrow can bounce off the shelf causing a nock high impact.  If it's too high, it just flies in that orientation, also causing a nock high impact.

Are you shooting three under or split?  What is your nock set at.

Could also be a form issue.  You could be torquing the string, i.e., putting too much pressure on the string, either high or low in your three-finger grip.

I'm shooting at eye level with 3 under. I don't believe form to be the issue, because I did not experience this issue with my prior bow.  I started with my nock over a half inch over center and worked down to 1/4 or so.  I worked the nock up and down those intervals and found that I can get the bare shafts 3 or so inches under the fletched at 13ish yards, but that's the best I'm getting.

Thanks

Are you nocking under the nock point?  If so, a half-inch really isn't very high for three under.  Arrow could be banging off the shelf. Try it at 5/8-inch or higher.

Are you using the same nocks on bare shafts and fletched arrows?  Nocks that are too tight can sometimes cause problems as well.

Do you cant the bow when you shoot? Right or left handed?

Yeah, I was told that via email as well.  I'm pretty ignorant to this whole trad thing, and Just assumed over 1/2 would be to high.  Thanks for the input! I'll try it out as soon as I'm back from vacation  :)

I'm at 5/8 on all my longbows, and around 1/2 on my recurves.

At 1/4" above, I believe your arrows are bouncing off your shelf. As others have said, move your nock up to 1/2" then work your way up to 5/8" or slightly greater. I think you will see improvement. Most of my bows have settled around 9/16" above.

Check your tiller and see if you are more than an 1/8th or so positive? Most of the time three under requires a zero or even tiller to be optimum since the string is grasped closer to center. Also, are you heeling the Bow with your hand like a longbow? this can throw limb timing off also. Most of the time a Bow tillered positive is for a split fingered release which actually puts more pressure on the top limb and the weaker top limb is evened up with the lower limb dynamically.I am wondering if you are a bit o the stiff side with your arrow and coupled with that your limb timing is also affecting your low impact? Usually, a stiffer lower limb will cause a Positive tillered Bow to shoot high three under and cause the shooter to have to raise the nock point to bring down the impact point and balance the limb timing.Best of luck.

check out the above
don't worry about what way the nocks are pointing fletched and bare shafts should group to gether(a little low and right for right handed)
As we get older our bow weight goes down and our body weight goes up, One of Lifes little jokes.

I don't think you're supposed to use a fast flight string on a Bear Grizzly. Are you sure it's not a Super Grizzly?

You need two nocking points too bro to make sure your arrow nock does not slide down the string when you release the string. I use tie on nocks like is shown in the Ryan Sanpai video here. Good luck

Alright, so I've made decent progress, and moved back to 15 yards from 10, and now instead of 8" low at 15 (3ish at 10) I'm now only 2 inches low at 15.  Although, now ive noticed drift to the right (4-5") which indicated a weak spine.  According to Three River's calculator, i am underspined with my current setup, and can get proper spine moving up to a 340.  If i do so, ill have 225-275 gr up front.  Is that to much weight up front?  Looks like ill either need to drop some weight on my 400s to (450gr or so) or go up to a 340 (600+gr).  I'm thinking ill try 340s, because id rather have the added weight for hunting.  Any advice for the newbie?

-Thanks a lot  :)

I don't think you were underspined I'm shooting 500 with that tip at full length. Those calculators are always stiff on spine.
