Is this normal? (Tuning)
« on: August 12, 2017, 07:18:00 PM »
So I thought I had my Bodnick Slick Stick paper tuned. Bow is 54# @ 28" and I draw to right at 29". What I thought I had it tuned with was a GT Hunter 400 Spine cut to 31-5/8" BOP, stock insert with 2-50 grn and 1-20 grn weights (total of 120 grains of screw in weights) and a 145 grn point. Super nock and 3x4" feathers and wrap. Total arrow weight is 570 grains. So For Broadheads I had some 125 Grn Ace standards without a current use and 25 grn broadhead adapters. I figured 5 grains over close enough (and yes I did weigh them 575-578 grain total weight). So for several days I have been shooting them and they are hitting where my field points hit. Today I finished a new B55 string and to check brace and nock point I shot through paper. Slightly stiff so I increased BH by 1/4 inch and bullet holes at 6 ft, 12 ft and 10 yards. So today I decided to pay more attention to arrow flight (fine tuning or maybe over thinking). Fishtailing but still hitting where it's supposed too. I then tried some 150 grn Stingers, same result. I thought immediately maybe my BH creeped so raised it and tried again. Same result. So I thought I would then try 125 grain stingers (total arrow weight 550 grn). Still hitting where they need to go but no fishtailing. Does this happen often? Am I over thinking this again? Should I stick with the 125 grn and assume that the paper tuning is incorrect? Would the above arrow seem about right for my setup or too weak/stiff? I thought I was good but the fishtailing didn't look right.
Life can be complicated. Hunting shouldn't be.

Are you sure  you're seeing fishtailing and not just the arrow going thru paradox? Usually with that much weight up front going up or down 20 grains would make that much difference if you are close. I bareshaft tune with FPs, then final tune fps to broadheads. If FPs and BHs are grouping together you are there.

Both 125 and 145/150 BHs are grouping together with FPs but the 145/150 are fishtailing and the arrows are slapping together when they hit the target. I was going to see how the 125 grn shot through paper again but I will probably drive myself crazy and over think it.

Did the ACE's spin true when you glued them on? With that length arrow I wouldn't think they would be stiff with that much weight up front. Worst case...the stinger 125 is a great head.

Tex, Yes they were spinning just fine. I glued them on with hotmelt and it had crossed my mind but the Stinger 150's did the same thing. You are right Stinger 125 is a great head and even better than the 150 IMO. The 150 has a much larger ferule which prevents you from using most pull through sharpeners. So it wouldn't be a bad thing if it tuned with 125 grain at all.
