Quietest hybrid?
« on: August 13, 2017, 11:27:00 PM »
Which hybrids, or strongly deflexed/reflexed bows, are known for being very quiet?

Thanks in advance for your input, Skychief.

Tall Tines Stickflinger.  With a BCY X or Fury string and a pair of wool puffs, the only real sound I hear is my arrow impacting the target, and the bit of swish of the string leaving my fingers  For me in recent memory, the Stickflinger is just sensational.  My Hill Country Bobcat is also extremely quiet shooting.  Both of these bows rival my Hill bow in this regard.  And both of them are still really really quick bows.

Those two are standouts to me which is why they are in my stable.  Other bows I have owned which fall in your category are the Centaur bows, Toelke Pika/Whip HS, Big Jim Thunderchild, Java Man, New Wood Vanguard, Holm-made, Treadway Black Swamp, Hornes/Cleland Stickbows, Caribow, A&H/ Dryad ACS.

Thank you nineworlds9. I failed to mention that I'm most interested in a one piece.

Can you rate the Holm-made, Treadway, and the Toelke, if you don't mind?

Thanks, Skychief

I have a bunch of different toelke bows and the are a lot quieter than my other bows. Both my recurve and longbows are quiet. The long bows are just a light swoosh when the string is released, then the arrow impacting the target. The lynx and chinook recurves are also very quiet.

I have Fury strings from ten ring strings with single or double wool puffs on all of my bows and recurves have wool wraps. They are quieter than the stock strings.

Many of the more aggressive hybrids will benefit by a couple inches of wrap up to the base of the loops.

Sky,
10-4 on the 1pc.

Out of the ones you mentioned, I'm with Mik' on the Toelkes, Holms and Treadways would be right there with em honestly not far behind if at all, but Toelke bows are always super quiet.  You couldn't go wrong with any of those three choices, it would come down to grip, looks, and wait times if you ordered new.  The Treadway bows are an incredible value btw, impeccable workmanship and the most radical limbs of the three, the Black Swamp I used to have would hold its own with a Centaur.

I will say the Pronghorn longbow made by Herb Meland is about the quietest that I have shot. I have shot the 62&64 length. They both are great. I also believe that having a properly tuned bow; is one of the main keys to having a quiet bow.

Treadway, Toelke and Cold Mountain.  Cold Mountain Archery is not well known, but they are some of the quietest and best shooting bows that I have owned or shot.

Thanks for the replies all!  Anybody else care to comment.  I see no mention of Shrew bows.  Wonder if there is a reason for that.  Never shot one.

The Shrews are comparable to the Java Mans.  I cant speak for the new Belcher-made ones but I imagine they are just as good.  Ron wouldn't accept it if they were not up to par.  Can't go wrong with a Shrew.

I'm continually told how quiet my Toelke Whip is and same for my Lynx Longbow.

I have owned quite a few and the quietest by far is my Toelke Super D. It may not be as radical R/D as the others but it will hold its own in performance with the best of them, is just a whisper at the shot, almost no hand shock and light as a feather. You'll shoot deer that don't even know they've been shot.

The most quiet r/d longbow I ever had was a 64" Griffin one piece.  I haven't shot a blacktail, but there aren't many makes or models that I haven't owned or tried.  Toelke Whips are quiet and good performers too.  Stewart Slammers are very quiet as well.    I agree with Chuck regarding a 3 PC Stickflinger though.

Beautiful and a sweet shooter.

I didn't mention the super d, pronghorn, or critter gitter, because they have such little r/d that I don't consider them hybrids for the most part.  Always a balance between performance and silence and we are fortunate to have so many great bows to chose from.
