Plasti-Dip for limb tip protector?
« on: August 14, 2017, 01:02:00 PM »
I'm using Uukha limbs and the tips are so small it's difficult to find a tip protector that fits well.

So... I'm wondering if any of you folks have used Plasti Dip for limb tip protection. If so, how is it working out?

Not tried the dip. I use baby bottle nipples on my small tipped recurves.

On one recurve I had that was scratched on the lower limb tip I spread 2 or 3 thin coats of epoxy over the tips to provide protection. It worked well. It's been a few years and I just checked the tip and the epoxy coating is still there and not noticeable unless you look real close.

I would think plast dip would work, but never tried it.
God Bless

Jim,
It works well.  I've had best luck with the liquid in a can.  Versions are available as a spray and a brush on.  Remember it usually takes 3-4 dips to provide the thickness and protection you want.  I give each dip 24 hours to cure.  Probably doesn't need to be than long.  It dries to the touch in a half hour and you can use the bow, just don't touch the coated tip to anything.

Another option to consider is heat shrink tubing.  Find a diameter that slides over the biggest part of the tip.  Slide it to the position you want.  Cut the tube a half inch longer than the bow tip and apply heat gently.  Hair dryer better than open flame.  When it fits tight, then use a lighter to heat the excess past the bow tip.  When it's hot enough to start running, push the end of the tube toward the bow.  This will seal the open end of the tube.

I use the binky. Much more protection and extended longevity than the nipples in my experience.

Well... I took advice received from Sipsey River and bought a can of Liquid Electrical Tape (aka. Plasti-Dip). I put on three coats and it looks like it's going to work fine. I'll just have to see about durability. Of course I can always put a little more on if it wears or tears--I've got plenty.         :)
