« on: August 22, 2017, 11:54:00 AM »
Have any of you used an app for your cellphone that gives you an overview of where you are hunting ?
I'm hearing that it will show you where your sent is going to drift .
Is this lagit , or just nonsense ?

There are several apps that can show you that information but in my humble opinion they are only good for showing what the forecasted wind direction is. What the direction you will realize based on terrain, thermals etc will be much different 99% of the time. But it can give you information that allows you to keep an accurate log of what to expect in a given location based on the forecast.

Not a mobile app but a site I like to use when scouting for planning is  https://www.windfinder.com/  you can enter a location and dig a little deeper into statistics and see a graphical representation of the various wind directions by month in a percentage format. Helps me plan stand locations for what I can expect the wind to be the majority of the time.

I have one called Antler Insanity. you can mark your stand and then see the wind direction well before you get out of the vehicle.

I don't find it useful fr much else though.

Scoutlook, you can save your stand locations and edit what is the favorable winds to hunt. It will show the current wind direction and show the future winds on an hourly forecast

Thanks for the reply .
I'm still wondering if it's worth the trouble to use one .

Check out huntstand.com gives you aireal imagry plus weather and wind direction.  Works kind of like a gps in that you can save stand location bedding areas food sources plus a whole bunch more. I've had it on my phone for about 4 or 5 years, and will use it to study new areas i want to check out, also show property boundries.

Too many bows to list, and so many more I want to try!  Keep the wind in your face, and your broadheads sharp.

I'd look at what elevation those apps pull there data from. I have a met tower at work and it pulls all it's data from 35' and 70'. The wind direction at 35' can be quite different than at ground level. I would think that taking notes on wind direction/time of day/temperature and comparing them to what the app says before the season starts is the thing to do. Then you can know if it's accurate enough to be relied on. At home in Az I rely on temperature, sun and thermals to try to predict the wind, but I'm always in a canyon or on a mountain. Back in Wisconsin I hunt flat ground close enough to Lake Michigan that I can use the weather forecast to reasonably guess the wind. I

I have been using the Primos wind direction app for many years. I like the features and it's simple to use. Wind is always subject to change, but I have multiple sets on each farm I hunt. This just gives me an idea of what direction to head while I'm at the house. Happy hunting

Scoutlook is what I use too. You can check wind forecast hour by hour to find best location. Saves lots of time with maps, memory or checking wind forecast

Really, a wind app? Lick your finger and lift it above your head.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

I don't think he is asking about the wind now...I think he is asking about the wind direction over the duration of his next hunt.  For example, I do this all the time, I will look to see what the wind direction will be doing hour by  hour for my upcoming hunt - say this afternoon.

It also is super helpful to note that the wind direction may shift during your sit.  Which happens.  That way I sit a stand that will work for both wind directions.

Dark sky is excellent for wind and precipitation.   I find most of the hunting related apps worse than weather apps.

Having said that Walt, I don't use an app when I hunt the mountains as it is useless.  So maybe is for us easterners...

I use huntstand and it worked very well for me last year. I mainly use it to see what the wind is supposed to do over the time period I plan to hunt so I can choose a stand to sit accordingly.

Yeah I assumed it was for looking ahead. As for the finger - go for a turkey breast feather on the bow - much cooler look!    :biglaugh:
