Full disclosure...This hunt is the complete opposite of my usual hunting. It is a guided hunt, pre scouted and on private land. While I'm capable and often go to extremes to find deer on public land in PA, this is a welcome change and great start to each hunting season. The outfitter and guide are friends from PA. Though the operation is mostly tailored to compound hunters.  They do a lot of the leg work prior to arrival. My own guide is a longtime friend from high school,  he knows my shot limitations and puts me in stands that  are a little "tighter" than the stands that compound shooters would use. He busts his butt trying to make sure I get some shot opportunities. We move stands and to try for the bigger bucks. I quickly "weaken" and shoot at something before the big one arrives. I saw several bigger than what I killed but a close shot at a mature deer is hard to pass.

The number of deer I saw this time was just unreal. I sometimes see more deer in 1 hour than I see in 10 years in PA. And yet they have a drawing for tags!  The weather turned cold and rainy after they had a long hot dry period. Deer were coming out of everywhere! Where grass was normally knee high it was really short. They were having a heavier than normal acorn drop so we spent most of the time down low in the oaks. Deer were coming by at any hour of the day. Some years we have to work much harder to get a close shot.

On another note, I don't care for Axis trad shafts that I used for this hunt.  The inconsistency of spine around the shaft is unacceptable when compared with some other brands. I selected the Axis shafts based on GPI, spine, small diameter, wood grain look and the fact that I had some in stock and tuned to correct length and without no time for testing others. I found the Axis frustrating for grouping. Though my penetration on animals was excellent. Since I have been back I tuned some standard diameter gold tip trads and accuracy is almost effortless compared to an equal tuned Axis. To check your Axis shafts  put the tip end on a table and the nock end in your left hand, push down on the center of the shaft with your right palm and  roll the shaft back and forth under pressure. Feel the "lumps".  Now do the same with a Black Eagle or other premium shaft.

Set up for this hunt was a Kanati Logbow 60lb@30", Eastin Axis Trad shafts, Grizzly single bevel heads, 300 grains total up front for a 647 gr arrow. Penetration is not an issue.

He not all that big. At least not by Wyoming standards. He is plenty big for me though!! Those are just good photos of the rack. And the buck was not yet gutted so he looks heavy. I'd guess 170 lbs?
