Sharpening Three Blade Heads ???
« on: October 02, 2017, 06:36:00 PM »
How does everyone sharpen their 3 blade heads?  I lay them flat on a file, do all 3 sides, then progress to finer stones laying them flat.  While this gets them sharp, they are not shaving sharp.  How do others get them razor sharp?

For me, a file followed by an extra fine stone and cardboard gets the job done. They will not feel razor sharp due to the steep angle but they will certainly shave hair easily. The key is to use very light pressure as you progress.

I have used the Tru-angle R3 ceramic hone to resharpen and touch up Thunderhead 3 blade broadheads. Don't see why it wouldn't work for fixed blades.

They wouldn't shave for me  until I went to leather strop and rouge after a fine file and oilstone.

Chainsaw raker file. Countdown method starting at 10 strokes per side going down to one and getting lighter as I go. I then use the smooth steel edge of the raker file like a butcher's steel and use the countdown method. Shaving sharp every time....and i mean scary sharp.

I count down also, first with a file and then with an old Schrade Hone Steele and sometimes a crockstick . I can carry these in my fanny pack and resharpen in the field .

File pressure was always a problem for me with three blades. I always pushed way to hard. Great tips above.

Fine single cut file to a fine edge.

Then I use a Norton scythe stone to put a slight hollow ground along the edges.  Laying the curve of the stone between two edges of the head and working with sharpening oil.

I use a  Diamond jewel stick. When each blade will pop a rubber band held between your thumb and pointer finger there sharp enough.

Don't forget that we have an awesome "How To" forum with a wealth of handy information. I did a video that's on there and although the quality isn't the best it clearly shows how I achieve shaving sharp 3
blades. Here's a link.

Depends on the head...some need a belt sander to level the bevels 1st....

With level bevels....jewel stick, diamond stone, fill....all work if applied properly.

Finalize by using very fine grit wet sandpaper. it takes off that final burr and they will easily shave hair.
