Kentucky Elk Hunt
« on: October 03, 2017, 07:57:00 PM »
Retired this year and got drawn for an Archery Bull Elk tag for Eastern Kentucky. Which is where Im from originally, been living in the flat lands, Western Ky,so long both my legs are the same length now. Hunted hard for two weeks. Had some close encounters but the wind change busted me several times. However God took over and put me in the right place at the right time. Called in a 6x7 made a shot on him , on the move from 15 yds. Hit was about the second rib from the rear quartering forward. Got both lungs. Actually I don't even remember the shot. The bull moved to my right down a very steep back. I had one opening. I remember looking at the side of the bull starting my draw and then the next image I recall was the big guy running away with about 5 inches of arrow showing. I figure I got at least 25 to 26 inches of penetration. We trailed him about 200 yds. Actually walked passed him about 15 yds. He went down along side a logging road over in a weed patch. Guy with me had a score sheet an a tape so we roughly scored him. got a gross of 305. So even with deductions he should easily make P&Y. Can someone help me with posting a few pics. Used a recurve pulling 51 lbs at my 29 inch draw. Arrow was 580 grns. 2 blade single bevel broadhead

Was most honored to be included in your prep and being updated on your daily hunts.

Your ardent prep both physically and mentally paid large dividends. Would suspect there would be few sixty six year olds  in condition enough to relentlessly traverse the mountains for thirteen days.

I salute you.

Biggest concentration of elk are on the LEA ( Limited Entry Area )but you have to be drawn for a spot. There are also Vouchered lands that are first come first serve. Public land in areas near LEA'S will hold some elk. The heard has exceeded 10000 but they are not as concentrated as they once were it is believed that they are spreading out more and using timber vs open fields. I hunted hard for 2 weeks. Wore out a pair of boots had to buy more. But it paid off.

Here one more from George.

He wished he had a better pic than in the back of his pickup, but this one shows the antlers a little better.

Congrats on a fine bull-envy ability at 60 to be hunting those hills.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.
