Gun season buck PICS
« on: November 16, 2017, 09:23:00 PM »
Tonite I went back to the secret stand I took a bocbcat and a doe out of last year and one of my better bucks on Oct 11 this year.

Beautiful evening, nice breeze , not too cold , saw a little buck across a small beanfield  early on. Enjoyed a mini Hershey bar and then silently a buck was going by on my right cutting the corner of the field just like the last one but close enough to shoot.

He made it thru my good shooting lane and went into the brush behind my tree. I turned around and looked back around the tree on my left. The buck came into view and stopped broadside at 17.3 yards or so. LOL

I drew my (kinda)new TD longbow but there is a 2" sapling right where the arrow needs to go. I have my harness on good and adjusted right so I lean waaaaay out, bracing my knee on the stand , ensuring I miss the sapling .

And mmmmmmmmiissss the buck, just over his back.

He runs a little ways, stops and looks around and walks across the little beanfield to my left rear.
I know I miss because I saw it clear his back but I look with binos to be sure no blood on him and then I can see my nock behind where he was.

Damn! That should have been easy, I guess I put so much into missing the tree that I missed everything!

So went my chance to get a pretty 8 point gun season buck.

I sit down and whine to myself and berate myself for blowing an easy shot.......

Be back in a bit, it aint over til the chunky girl sings, and she was warming up.....     :bigsmyl:
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Not 5 minutes later, over my mental whining I hear something and look to my right. Coming along the old levee which is overgrown with trees, is a clone of the first buck with a broken tine.

He stops and works a scrape and then comes on, heading like he is going to come thru the trail in front of me where they are supposed to go. Noooo, he cuts the field corner at the last minute and heads right toward my stand. Baaad news...

Now he is angling to go behind my tree on a faint trail about 7 yards out. Right side of tree and I'm right handed. I'm gonna be out of room to shoot with him still quartering to me. I have my bow drawn and tracking him along, not going to be a shot.....
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Suddenly something makes him turn to his left off the trail?

The bow is still drawn and when he turns, the arrow is gone and looks great! He goes hard across the treelined ditch the stand is in and across the little beanfield. Nearing the other side, he starts slowing and stumbles a little, then gathers himself and walks into the brush there. I have the binos on him most of the way and can see blood. He disappears in the brush and I see no movement.

Of course, now I'm second guessing the shot, because he went about 120 yards before he went in the brush. But I saw where that arrow went and I know he is done.

I text my bro and say I just ended my buck season, you are now allowed only 2 by any means in MO.

He replies- seriously?

So I gather my stuff and walk over to the shot spot. Good blood right there and I follow the trail even tho I'm sure I know where he entered the brush. Find the broadhead end of the arrow , and the blood is good and getting better....

Stay sharp, Kenny.

So I call John, and he says I just sharpened my knife, I'll be there in a minute.

I walk on to the brush on the trail and he is 15 feet inside the brush. A nice fairly mature 8 point with a broken tine.

John came down, field dressed the buck for me and helped me load him up! Most excellent brother he is!

What a turn of events, all I can say is never give up!   :)

So a goal of a gun season buck with longbow is met, and I enjoy every bit of it!

Hope you enjoyed my tale as much as I enjoyed the making of it!

Way to go Sir,nice to have a brother who does the hard work-congrats to him as well.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.
