That's a very unique looking buck. Too bad about the meat loss. Since the cape is questionable, I would suggest a skull mount. In my opinion they look better than a shoulder mount, take up less space on the wall, and are much cheaper. I skull mount all of my bucks.

Great story and lesson told here. Not sure it would have helped but I started using lighted nocks this year and on the all 3 of the deer I've shot it has made it much easier to see the hit for me. I'm on the fabulous side of 50 now and my eyes are what they once were.

Monster buck. Congrats and thanks for the story. The entry wound you picture/describe looks a lot like a liver hit, which often doesn't bleed at all or much initially. But if not pushed, the deer will usually bed and die within 100 yards.

Thanks for posting your story.
Same thing happened to me but on a doe. I just happened to find her a week later when I saw some crows. Worst feeling ever while hunting. Now I will keep looking until I've done everything I can.

Great story "Keefer" and a buck to be proud of. Might check with your taxidermist about securing a cape for you from another similar sized deer. The gentleman I used before his death would get friends he knew were good with a knife to save a few hides for him for just this sort of occasion. Definitely worth looking into. Congrats again and thanks for sharing.

Tough to lose a deer anytime but at least you were able to salvage the rack and a lesson or two. Good on you for sticking it through.

Glad you found him! I remember the first deer I gut shot many years ago...I had seen the arrow enter and exit but it still showed no sign of entry other than one hair. No blood for the first 150 yards either...I backed out and found her the next morning without much trouble. They never go too far

Sorry I didn't mean to Bring this back up to the top but went back looking for the story in Nov. 2017 to ad this to the Highlights of 2017 and when I added the two pictures it brought it back to today's posts.
Mods I Wanted to put it in the Highlight section from the Pow wow but not sure just how ?
