Elk hunt 2018 - suggestions?
«

Dad and I are looking to take after elk in 2018. We went to NM in 2009 and he's in great shape, but years to climb mountains are best now...neither of us are getting younger!
Any suggestions on where with a modest budget? Thought I'd start some research now.

Idaho, if you can swing the distance. Colorado is a lot more popular, and Idaho has a better OTC deal in terms of non resident tags. It has a reputation for wolves, but there are still plenty of elk to be killed there, at a better price than Montana. I couldn't say where, cause I've never been, but it's where I'd be looking if I didn't go home to MT in the fall.

ID and CO are your otc choices and with lack of points is probably your best bet. Start doing your homework and leg/lung work. UT is an option as well if you are willing to only hunt spikes and cows in most units, but it is cheaper. Good luck!!

Me and a buddy might do Colorado again , if we do y'all could come. What has worked well in the past for us is if we have 2 groups we split up and hunt several miles apart and cover some ground then meet up in a few days and compare notes. And make a game plan for what we find or move to another area and start over. I'm no expert so I use boot leather and go from there.....
