Last deer hunt of the year
« on: December 30, 2017, 10:05:00 PM »
Well it's been cold but this morning we woke up to some white stuff. So what better way to spend an evening than in the woods.

So I've been hunting hard for a while now.  I've been plotting and scheming trying to fill my last doe tag. There has been some close calls but the deer have been winning.  I decided to set over a food plot that's pretty much gone. The deer had hit it hard earlier and there isn't much left. I sat there a few times last week and didn't see anything.

It was pretty windy tonight but I was hoping the cold and snow would trump it. It's been a long season  and how the woods have changed since I got my buck on September 30. Things started to look better just before dark as the wind laid down and the snow stopped falling.

It wasn't long before a grey snow cover form appeared from my right. A small doe slow came into range. I have been really holding out for one of those long nosed old girls. Trouble is I haven't had much luck in getting one in range.  It just seems like everything I been seeing has horns or is small. But tonight I thought things are gonna happen.

She got to about ten yards and was broadside I drew picked a spot and let go. I ain't really sure what happened but I thought I hit it low and way back. She ran about 30yards and stopped. I watched her and after awhile she started to feed again. It was apparent I'd missed. I watched her for several more minutes and she still seemed good. Not understanding how I'd shot under her (I'll blame the extra clothes) another deer appeared.

With the missed doe still looking for grub the newcomer was closing the distance. It was time to get another arrow on the string.

Ok to get back to this. It wasn't long and the new arrival was in range. I was ready and picked a spot. Watching the arrow spin all the way I new it was on the mark.

What I found when I got out.

That's awesome! I'm heading to Florida for a hog hunt next week but when I get back I'm gonna hit it hard for the last 2 weeks of season. You've had a great season!

Congrats! Late season deer are the toughest
When a man shoots with a bow it is own vigor of body that drives the arrow,  his own mind controls the missile's flight......His trained muscles and toughened thews have done the work
