Wood arrow users....your thoughts??
« on: January 15, 2018, 12:46:00 PM »
I have been tossing around the idea of using wood arrows. I have been using carbon and dabbled with a few aluminum's in the past but recently I have had the itch to put together some wood arrows. I'm about 99% sure I'm going to go with some Douglas firs. I just like the idea of the heavier weight, durability of them, and nostalgia of the wood arrow in general. I'm probably going to shoot 150 grain points. My current bows that I'll be shooting them out of are a 64" Black Widow PLX 54# at 28" (my draw is 28") and a 60" Black Widow PMA 50# at 28". I know you can get a "test kit" with various spine weights, but wanted to know what most of you have found worked for / flew the best for you in those bow weights?

On the PMA I would guess 70-75, I have a PMA and PSA but not the PL.

I have a PL-III that is 53#@28. I use at least 65s. Have had better luck with 70-75.  Lots easier to add point weight! I draw just over 28" and arrows are 30" from the valley to bop.

Good luck, they are fun to play with!

I bought a test kit from Surewood Shafts, I ended up settling on 60/65 spine with 225 grains up front of a full length shaft.  I'm shooting these out of a Northern Mist Ramer that is 66" 48# @ 28", and am getting great flight out of them.

You could give Roger a call at Black Widow and get his recommendation. He is more than willing to help and I'm sure he can get you close. Mike

I have a 52# BW recurve and it will shoot a pretty wide range of spines well but I would agree with Rodd that 65#-70# is about right.

I'm about in your range with an inch and a half longer draw but I shoot 125 gr heads.  I use 65-70# Douglas fir and I taper the last 10" down to 5/16".

You may get by with 65-70# or 70-75#.  Depends a bit on the shelf cut and your release.

Out of my 52lb pronghorn I’m shooting 60/65 wood with 145 grain points. I really like shooting wood. Switched last year from the EFOC carbon darts to woodies and couldn’t be happier.

With my 54 to 55# bows, 65/70 Surewoods.

My 53# Blacktail shot 28.75" 60/65 Sitka Spruce the best.

My 48# Tall Tines recurve liked 55/60 Surewoods.

All with a 28 inch drawlength.

For my recurve (centershot), about 5-10# over spine than what I'm pulling flies amazing.  For a wide-handle selfbow, 5-10# under.

The only thing I don't like about woodies is shooting targets with broadheads affixed.  Carbons & aluminums let me unscrew the point, back the shaft out & reaffix.  Woodies make me either pull the shaft all the way through (risks damaging feathers) or back it out with the broadhead still on (tears up the target and risks losing my broadhead inside if I didn't glue it well).

Call your shaft supplier and talk to them about what you need. They will know and will fix you right up.

I've found over the years it's best to go 10-15# over the weight of the bow. So 65/70 would work for me.

I shoot a 44# @ 30 PMA and am shooting tapered cedars that spine 60-65. Perfect flight with a 140 Grizzly or field point up front.
Get bamboo.
