Tamarack shafts
« on: January 28, 2018, 12:33:00 PM »
Has anyone used tamarack or larch shafts? If so do they stay straight , are they heavier than cedar and tough as Douglas fir ?
Is Three Rivers the only one that sells them ? I would just like to try something different I currently use cedar and Douglas fir.

Tim I have been shooting larch for nearly 30 years. As far as toughness goes larch and fir are about the same. Overall larch may be a little heavier but not much. I think the fir grain shows up better than the larch. For shafts check Kootenai River  Archery, Raptor Archery, or Surewood may have some once in awhile. Any of these should be able to tell you where to get some.

I had a set of tamarack arrows years ago and loved them!

I make several dozen each for a fella who prefers tamarack over douglas fir, and I get the shafts Kootenai Archery. They're about the same toughness as douglas fir, but seem to be slightly heavier in weight.

I consider larch very similar to DF but a step up, a bit heavier is my experience too.
