what to sit on when ground hunting
« on: November 09, 2007, 09:36:00 AM »
What do you groundhunters sit on?  I started groundhunting this year and have been sitting on the ground.  Two problems, it isn't real comfortable and I need to move alot to get into position to shoot.  I need something small and lightweight as this is the reason I took to the ground.  I like to hunt deep in the woods when possible and the treestand is cumbersome to carry for that distance.  What do you think of the Nif-T-Seat?

The Nif-T-Seat is the best invention for ground hunting that has ever come along.  I love it!

I mostly use a Dean Torges seat.

I have a 7 gallon bucket with a swivel seat on it, but that's in a natural ground blind.

One of my best buddies built me a great seat that will backpack flat, is light, leans against a tree, or stands by itself in brush or blowdown, is comfortable, and has a full backrest.

I'm gonna put a pic on here next Monday of it, and we are gonna be a sponsor on the site and start doing these for ground hunters/turkey hunters.

Pretty cool deal..will advise Monday.

Hot seats work pretty good too if you need to be mobile.

Check with Dennis, a sponser here, at Git-er-done Archery. He has a cool seat.

Ray,
Looking forward to seeing that idea.
I like the Torges seat as well - as the tree makes a good backrest.

I have a seat like this. It is a folding stool type deal with a folding backrest. I attached backpack straps. The pocket underneath the seat holds as much stuff as a daypack so I dont have to carry both. I use this when I wear my ghillie suit or when I use either pop-up or natural material ground blinds. If I need to move I gather up, fold it, put it on like a day pack and head out. It is easy to wear and doesn't interfere if i want to still hunt to my next spot. It works VERY well and was less than 20 bucks. I also added a few narrow buckle straps to carry a coat or jacket. Sometimes, I even strap my small pop-up blind on it, and it functions like a small pack frame. I will take a picture tonight and try and post it tomorrow if ya like.

I have been using a Hunter Specialties tripod chair.  It has a small backrest and it is really light.

I bought a Double Blind a few years ago with their 3 legged seat. It works great in the blind but also when I want to ground hunt. Has a full back rest and works really well.

I use a small folding "camp" seat. It folds flat, and has a canvas sling type seat. It is very light fits in my pack easily. will even fit in the cargo pocket of my B.D.U.s. This type of seat does not have a backrest, and big guys might not be too comfortable with it. I usually lean back against a large tree or brushpile and am quite comfortable.

I shiver when I hear the word chiggers....they are 100 times worse than skeeteres.  At least skeeter bites stop itching after a couple hours.

Thanks for all the comments guys.  I really look forward to seeing your seat Ray.  I want something that is light, packable, and quick and quiet to set up/takedown.  I was about to order a Niff-T-Seat, but I'll wait to see what Mr. Hammond has up his sleave.  Thanks again and keep em coming!

Mike
