Homemade Wind Checker......
« on: October 09, 2005, 04:21:00 PM »
Just a little something I thought you folks might find interesting.

First get 4-5 dried milkweed pods. The ones that are just starting to open seem best.Get a 35mm film canister(I like to use one thats been aired out a bit.

Drill a 3/8th's hole on the bottom....

Take out ,a little at a time, the fluffy stuff and knock as many of the seeds you can off. They don't float as good with too many seeds.....

Now start stuffing all you can into the canister. You should be able to get at least 4 pods in..........

They're gonna want to come back out,but keep stuffing and then carefully put the top back on.Now just stick something pointy in to pull some out.As you pull more out to use,it will just self feed out.If it gets low, fill it back up with more pods(collect some extras, now's the time around here)....

You can just use it like this,in your pocket or pack. But I like to to attatch mine to my bow.

I'll be back to show how and where I put it.....

Take some sticky velcro and stick some of the hook side to the canister......

Stick some of the soft side to the corner of the bottom piece of you bow quiver.Or anyplace where you can put it where it won't get knocked off.Where I put it,it's well protected........

Now just put the two together. This way rain can't get at it,and it's real handy.Just pull some out when needed......

That looks like a good idea. I wonder if cattail pods would work. I have not seen milkweed around here.

Curt I have used them for years. I just stick the whole pod, once good and dry in a small pocket on my fanny pack that I use only that pocket for. I liike them as if you release a few together I can see them for 50-60yards easily!! Cool idea!! Shawn

This way you can keep them real handy and dry........

I use a feather on my bow,but these are good for long range(like Shawn said 50-60yds).The feather will only tell what's going on immediately around you.Sometimes it a real eye opener when you watch them.Wind in some spots is very tricky!!!!

Yeah man, I had a stand in abottom on the edge of a curve in tghe ridge. I said man as long as a north wind it will be great. I sat it several times over a few year period and nothing, it was sweet spot, one day I let a few go and man they blew dead south for about 15yards. and than swung around in front of me and dead north for 60-70 yards. The wind was bouncing off that ridge line and going right into the bedding area. Shawn

Nice idea Curt.

I've been doing like Shawn and keeping a few pods handy in pockets and such.  Watching them is not only eye opening, also keeps you awake on those long boring sits.

cool!  I tied a turkey feather on my bow like Guru.  I like your idea.  I'll keep my eyes open for milkweed.

The key is to pack as much stuff in as you can. With as little seed as possible, they float better that way.But the more you pack in,the better it self feeds out.

Just keep packin' it in  ;)

Never used milkweed, will have to look in our local fields and find some. Looks like God made a windchecker just for us. Thanks Curt!

if you can't find or until you can find milkweed use regular old cotton balls stuffed in the canister.

I have pinned (w/a saftey pin) a cotton ball to the inside of my jacket and pulled off a stran to flick in the wind.

The wind does do amazing things when you can watch it for a ways.

great idea curt!
