Form Vid (or maybe deform vid) 3 new vids 2/7
« on: February 01, 2007, 12:18:00 AM »
Ok guys I would like some pointers if you are patient enough for the download.  I think it may be a bit of a large file (5 megs)
Thanks in advance.

Andrew, looks good to me. How is your consistency? I see a couple of things, though all of them small. First, your elbow seems just a touch high, pulling more with the shoulder than back. You may have too much tension in your release hand causing the slight "away" motion at the moment of release, follow through looks good to me though. Your bow arm seems to fall away to the left a bit early...usually this is caused by too much tension on that arm or locked elbow. Try imagining pushing with your bow shoulder instead of the entire arm and play with how "far" you push out with the bow arm as you draw. From this angle, it looks like if you miss it will be left...is that happening?

Additional camera angles would help: from behind slightly above and below, opposite side.

I'm no expert, but it looks like you are well on your way to good shooting.

I went back and watched it again and don't think the bow arm fall away is that pronounced...it looks like more in slow mo than it really is. I'd be interested to hear what type of problems you are having, ie. what the results on target are.

JC,
My shooting tends to be paper plate most of the time.  Then sometimes I get wild fliers.  If I really concentrate I can stack the arrows right in there for short periods. I think you may be right about more back tension.  I also was worried that my bow arm "drops or reacts" too much on release.  I think you are right that it is minimal but I also think you are right that it could be better, when I watch you and Terry and some others the arm seems more stabile.  I will try not "over extending" and work on pushing rather then just trying to "hold" it steady.  Thank for the comments I will post another video when I work on the recommendations I get.

Yeah, that's the first thing I thought....looks like you might suffer with the frustrations of really good shots most of the time then a flier that makes you say "where did that come from?". I know because as I have progressed I spent a lot of time watching myself on video and trying different things. Your video looks familiar   :D

I'll bet you'll see things not only tighten up but become more consistent with a touch elbow down on the drawing arm, relaxing the back of the drawing hand, not trying to hold but "reach" for the target with the bow arm (while not overextending). Clear as mud, huh?

Good luck, let us know how it goes!

Not to judge but just observstion.  Seems like your bow hand drops a couple inches on the shot and I beleive the second shot anchor is farther back than the first shot anchor.  I struggle with my bow hand dropping and it seems if I keep pushing at the target making sure not to reach the point of locking my elbow I do better.

Tuck ya thumb down under and away from your eye.
There does not appear to be a solid anchor point.

Looks like you drop your head into the anchor after you start your draw. It is not much but can make a big difference in consistent results. Concentrate on drawing to the anchor keeping the head absolutley still. That along with the drawing with the back tension and you will be popping nocks off.

I'm only going to add one thing......your release hand fingers(mostly the bottom two) are curled back up immediatly after you release...this tells me you have tension still in your hand at release and/or you are 'telling' yourself to release.  How do I know?....I was doing the same thing years ago when I came back to the Trad Bow.

Practice some close shots 'thinking' about straighening those fingers out when you release.  Don't think about anything else but coming to anchor set and releasing with your fingers straight out and follow through.  I bet your release will feel much smoother.

Here are some new vids.  I am still working on: pushing my bow arm and not over extending it prior to the shot
Keeping my draw arm elbow lower
Perfecting my anchor point, for me the best seems top finger under cheekbone.
Relaxing hand on release.
I still have to consciously work on all of the above and none have become second nature and I think in the vids you will see some inconsistency.
I am however having much fewer fliers.
Take a look and thanks for input ahead of time
Also these are larger vids 8-10megs

Andrew, if your consistency is improving, you are moving in the right direction! Two things I see: first, your elbow is almost there...but still just a bit high. Not that big a deal and you can easily shoot great without the perfect elbow...just another one of those ethereal concepts of "the perfect form". Second, if you stop/start your vids quickly and watch the position of your head as you draw, you will see you are moving your head back right as you are approaching anchor (especially in the second movie). Not sure if you are trying to stretch anchor or what, almost looks like that. In my experience, the top of the "t" should stay rigid for best performance.

The last shot on the first video looks like your hand is very relaxed after release, watch and compare it to the other shots of the first vid. It looks like you are closing up then consciously opening it on the shot right before the last. That whole "relaxed release" concept really helps with back tension...you can't help but keep following through if the thing holding the string is simply gone.

Keep shooting and honing your form, you will work out the kinks and it will feel smooth with practiced repetition.

JC,
I am slowly evolving.  I think changing form will take months; I just need to keep focusing and reevaluating each motion.  Thanks for pointing out the head movement.  I am working on release and anchor point mostly.  I have narrow set eyes and a big nose so making everything work together and getting my eye over the shaft is challenging.  I also have an ego length of draw issue I need to let go and that may be part of it, I am probably 226.5-27.5” and of course want to be 29, LOL.  I noticed that my arrows were crossing from right to left and figured if I can take that left right movement out of the equation then it is all elevation.  Easier said then done.  It really made me think about body and bow cant, another possible variable, I need the arms and head to always be the same no mater what angle I shoot from; much, much easier said then done.  Your input has been invaluable. I will get better, I am bound and determined.  Small changes and slow progress is what it will take.  Thanks for taking the time to evaluate my “deform” you and the others have and I hope will continue to be a great help.
Andrew
P.s. I will post again when I feel I have made more progress.
Andrew
