Arrow Specs.....Again
« on: February 11, 2007, 09:59:00 AM »
I'm new to traditional after 17 years of compounds and I need some help with my arrow components.

I've put together an arrow that is 29.75" long (shaft length).  The shaft is a GoldTip 3555 with a 125 grain tip.  This puts me at very close to underspined with my 50lb Super Kodiak, so I was thinking of a 100 grain head.

My problem is that the arrow now weighs a mere 388 grains and if I take another 25 off, I'll be very light for whitetail - too light I think.

Is it conceiveable to shoot a 7595 shaft out of this thing with a 200 grain or greater head?  I know it's possible, but is it within the realm of possibility to get good arrow flight?  Am I wasting my time?

What are the specs on some of your proven arrows

Thanks,

Fred

I try to shoot over 9gr per pound of bow weight.  This will give you enough for a whitetail.  One thing you could do to get your total arrow weight up is use the weight tubes in your GT's.  You can get them from 3rivers.  If you have bareshafted and your fletched shafts are flying good I would try the weight tubes.  Hope this helps.  Cade

OK, so I'm hip deep in bare shaft testing for the arrow I plan to settle on (a shaft cutter is the best investment I've ever made, BTW).

I can shoot a 3555 with a 145gr head (29.75" shaft) and achieve good bareshaft flight.  The problem is that I want to stump shoot and this config gives me an arrow that's too delicate.

I've also tuned a 5575 with a 200gr head (30.5" shaft), but this head seems heavy and the arrow seems too long.

Finally, the same 5575 flies well with a 250gr head when cut to 29.5".  This configuration also puts me at 500 grains total weight (10gr/pound) which I've heard is optimal.

The problem with the lst two configurations is that I've paged through the 3RiversArchery catalog and I didn't see ANY 200gr or 250gr broadheads.

I need to build an arrow that'll work with stumps and deer, so what would you do?  Where are the heavy broadheads?

PS:  Adding feathers adds or diminishes spine?

Thanks,

Fred

Mrfritz, I either shoot a Wensel Woodsman or Razorcap.  You can get Razorcaps in 200gr.  For my WW I buy the 125 gr glue on and then glue a 75 gr steel adapter into them.  You can get these from 3rivers.  You can basically take your favorite broadhead that is 125 gr and add the adapter to make it a screw in that is at the weight you want.  Once you fletch them you shouldn't be able to tell if it under or over spined.  They will fly great.

I don't know if it was a typo or not, but you wouldn't jump from a 3555 to a 7595.  It would make sense for you to try a 5575.  I know that Black Widow, and perhaps others, offer Gold Tip tuning shafts with a selection of weights, inserts, etc, for a reasonable price, so it shouldn't cost you too much to find out if it will work.

Thanks for the replies guys.  That's not a typo.  I was originally going to try a 7595, but then jumped to a 5575 (read my second entry).

I'm going to have to try the 75gr inserts.
