brass insert question
« on: February 12, 2007, 10:23:00 AM »
On an earlier post (grains per pound) on this forum I asked a question and received some good info. One of the guys mentioned 100 grain brass inserts and I was wondering if that is going to make my arrows nosedive. I used them before shooting a 49# Morrison with 500 mfx's and there was serious nosedive once you got past 10 yards or so. This setup was pretty effective hunting though. I shot a barbado ram with it and it blew right through. My concern is I don't like the nosedive but I don't want to shoot underweight arrows either. Now I shoot 59# and i've got some 400 mfx's i'm going to use as soon as my feathers get here from 3 Rivers and I appreciate any feedback.

I was concerned about the same thing when I started using Gold Tip 5575 arrows, since I ended up with more weight on the front, about 195 grains (including the point), than I was used to in order to tune the arrows to my bow.  My FOC was about 18%, which was outside the upper limit recommended in some of the archery books I consulted.  But Roy Marlow, in Timeless Bowhunting, recommends a range of 10% - 20%, and says olympic archers "routinely use target arrows with balance points of 18% FOC or greater for maximum flight stability."  So naturally I went with his advice, since it supported what I was doing anyway.  Incidently (and probably more importantly) I don't notice any nosediving with an 18% FOC, and regularly practice out to 40 yds or so.  I suppose there is a point at which nosediving will occur, but that point is apparently higher than 20%.

Have never had any nosedive problem with high or extreme FOC arrows, my heaviest point weight is 425 gr. Other than expected lower impact at 25 yards the 800 gr arrow flies without a nosedive as well as my lightest 540 grain arrow which has 275 up front.

I have not had any issue with nose-diving.

You may want to try adjusting your nock point.

I have never experienced any nose diving problems and I shoot 225grs up front on all my arrows.  I can actually bareshaft and target shoot those bareshafts out to 30-40yds and they fly straight.  You may just need to do some nock point tweaking and eliminate a high nock condition.  Mark

Thanks for the advice everyone. I got set up with some beman classic 400's at 27 3/4 with 125 grain heads and 100 grain insert. During bare shafting it flew a little underspined so i'm sure with feathers i'll be fine. Still waiting for my feathers from 3 Rivers because of the wonderful 6 inches of snow with freezing rain on top with 3 to 5 more inches on top of that coming tonight!
