Whats a really good 3-D score.......
« on: February 13, 2007, 04:35:00 PM »
I know how the scoring works. But what is a really top notch 3-D score? I shot in my first tournament over the weekend. It was a lot of fun. I was just curious to what the best shooters around the country would score on average. Some of you guys with experience chime in.

All 10's! LOL
In my humble opinion, to be a serious "shooter" ya gotta do all 8's or better...
I'm only as good as my first shot.

Slayer:

An average of 8 is a good  reference point. At most courses, I'd consider anything over 8 to be pretty darn good shootin'.

However, these days it seems to take an average of 9 or better to place around here.

String Tracker, how many targets is that? And what is the average score per target? The 3-D tournaments I have shot have been 20 targets with a maximum of 10 pts per target.

I shot in one 2 weeks ago in topeka, ks and scored 294 out of 400.  I heard there was a guy that goes to this shoot and shoots 330's or better.  Thats 40 targets with 10pts max per target.
Oh yeah I won that weekend, but I want to go and shoot with this guy that gets 330's or better.

Takes about a 9 average around here to win, better than 8 for top five.
shoot straight shoot often

The better shooters in IBO average between 8 and 9 points per target.  The top 3 in the IBO world championships last year averaged 8.4-8.88 points per target thru 50 targets.  The average might drop a little this year though.  IBO increased the max yardage to 30 yards for 2007.

What's the typical yardage ya'll are shooting in your areas?

In most of the shoots I've been to it seems that 80% of total available points and above is a good score.

That's intersting to learn that you guys have a maximum distance you shoot at. Here we usually shoot between 28 and 36 targets. All seniors shoot from the same pegs, red, white and blue, although sometimes they will put out a longer black and white peg for the compounds. From the red peg, a kill scores 20 and a wound 16, white peg scores 14 or 10 and blue peg scores 8 or 4. Some shoots they declare that if you hit the inner kill with the first shot, you score 24. The distances range from about 5 yards out to 50 or 60 yards.
I never worry myself as to what the top boys or girls are scoring. I just do what you did and go out to have some fun and try and beat my last score. That way I've been surprised a few times when my name has been called out at the medal ceremony.

With a longbow and wood arrows my best score on a 30 target course scored X=11,10,8,5 is 281. This was 25 yard max but some were a little farther.

Different clubs score differently.  On 3-D targets, if most are kept within 30 yards, a good score would consist of 50% hearts, 40% lungs and 10% bodies.  No airballs/misses.  Converted to a 10-8-5 scoring system, that's about a 253 on a 28 target course.
