Left wing or right wing?????????
« on: February 13, 2007, 09:36:00 PM »
OK, a long time back I read that it was better for a righty to shoot left wing feathers and a lefty to shoot right wings. The article said that the arrow spinning away from your arm was the whole purpose. What am I gaining going to left wing feathers?

yes jason....that use dto be popular thought....

now with slow motion video, that myths been dispelled.  the arrow doesn't start spinning til long after its cleared the bow so it makes no difference.  shoot whacha can get your hands on...

Wolfman Jeff is right about the rat.  It doesn't make any difference.

I agree it doesn't make a difference as far as arrow flight is concerned. But if you’re shooting an arrow with a screw in head, right wing fletching does help to keep it from unscrewing as often.
I find the older I get, the less I used to know!

Doesn't make any difference in arrow flight, however, you might fletch with one wing or the other to get the arrow spinning in a direction that will complement a single bevel broadhead's penetration (See Dr. Ed Ashby's penetration studies elsewhere on this site.)  For example, would want right wing feathers to aid the penetration of a single beveled Grizzly broadhead.

Whatever you choose, just don't forget -
left wing = left helical
right wing = right helical.
How you attach those feathers is just as important as which ones you choose.
They are NOT interchangeable.

It does not make any differants. If you fletch your own and have a rw clamp dont buy a lw. I shoot left wing and my buddy shoots right wing and we can shoot each others arrows. Dont change.

Oh, I didn't say it couldn't be done. What you suggest can  be done. You can also lay concrete blocks on end, but that's not the right way.
Look closely at the EDGE of your feathers. Those tiny fibrous fibers lay in a direction that, while the bird is in flight, SHED teh air as it passes over the wing. It's a mirror image on the other wing. Same thing on your arrow shaft. You can glue on a right wing feather with a left helical, but then those fibers CATCH the air, as oposed to shedding the air over the top. Down range, this makes a HORRIBLE sound! You can litterally HEAR teh arrow coming. Makes a nasty racket.
I could jump out of the way of an arrow fletched wrong.
This ain't rocket science guys. There's a right way to do it.   Just get the right clamp.
