Prefered arrows for 60# Modern longbow
« on: February 18, 2007, 10:53:00 PM »
Well, it not really a 60 #.  With my 26 1/2" draw it is probably more like 55.  I was just wondering what shafts everyone uses that have similar setups.  I have tried 2016's, 2114's and 2117's.  It has been sugested to me that I get some 2018's to try.  I am using helical fletch feathers and my arrows are cut to 27 1/2".  The window is close to center cut.  Thanks

2018's will work fine with that setup.  I shoot about the same draw weight and use 2018's with 150 grains up front.  It's quick AND it packs a punch.

Thanks for that information.  I have been wanting to try 2018's, 1916's and 2115's.  To find a couple arrows of each is really tough...thanks for the input...chuck

I would say 2016's.  I think that 2018's will be to stiff.  I shoot about the same thing, and can not get 2018's to fly right unless I use a lot of point weight.  1916 will be to weak.  Good luck, let us know how it works out.

I use this shaft selector table as source for my Legacy shafts.
Maybe something to have a go with?

All the charts that I have looked at keeping throwing up the numbers of 1916 and 2016.  I havent had much luck with 2016's.  The nocks go on tight since I made a flemish string and I also noticed that the original string the nocks fit tight.  I think I will work on the nocks for a good fit and see if that changes the arrow flight with 2016's any...chuck

Have you tried changing the tip wieght?

And most importantly is your draw length actually what you think it is?
I find guys when being measured for arrows always pull further then when actually shooting. many seem to short draw.

Happened last to me at the range. This guy had just purchased a new 40# recuvre, up from a 35#.
His arrows flew light crap. He started with only a 6" brace height. So we raised that to 7 1/4",
I found that even raising nock point and or brace height made no difference. He was shooting 400's. I shot one from my 65# and was told to make sure I did not pull to much as his arrow was short. Short? I said, I draw 271/2" you said you drew 28". Well his arrow were about 26" and he had room left over. He was probably only getting 30# max.
Just a thought.

Also give consideration to your string........an 18 strand Dacron or Fastflight can't hold a candle to a 12 strand Dynaflight or 8125. The draw equivalent is an easy 5# between those two examples.

NOCK TOO TIGHT WILL DEFINITELY MESS UP YOUR FLIGHT. TRY HOT WATER TO MAKE THEM LOOSE OR SAND PAPER.

I am shooting 31" 2020s with 100gr heads and 29.5" 2020s with 125gr heads out of a Martin Savannah 60# longbow.  Both combos shoot well.

I've got a setup similar to yours.  2018s may be a little stiff at 27 1/2. 2016s should be good.  I find that if I leave my arrows a little long that they're a lot more forgiving to tune.  Play around a little with point weight.  You may also try a thinner strike plate or shim the one you have to thicken it a little.  The thinner plate will weaken the spine and the thicker one will stiffen it.  I usually have to do this to all my bows not only to tune the arrow but also to get em to shoot where I'm looking.

I have loosened up my nocks, and I have tried heaveir points (140) gr.  My 2016's are hitting nock right.  It may be that I need to get some 29" shafts and cut a 1/2" off at a time.  I did shoot some woodies 11/32 and they flew very straight out of my bow with my present rug and arrow plate (both are velcro rug).  I lined up my string to be in the middle of the upper limb and noticed that the outside of the string was even with my shelf with no rug on it.  I then place a shaft on the string and keeping the same alignment I have noticed that the shaft point to the left of the string by a good 1/4".  I am thinking now that I might want a 29" shaft to work with.  Man it is next to impossible to find shafts to expierment with unless you want a dozen at a time or on **** 1/2 dozen....well, I am open to suggestions and will keep trying...chuck

The 2016's do sound a little stiff.  I think your on the right track starting at 29 and working down.  Just to give an example.  I recently got a new batch of arrows for my widow.  2117s cut 30.25.  I was shooting 125 and 145 broadheads.  I decided to shorten my arrows to 29.75 for some unknown reason.  I didn't figure it would make much difference.  I had to go to 165 grain broadhead to get them to fly.
Go slow and shorten a little at a time.  You might try dropping your brace height a little. Sometimes something as simple as adding an extra set of string silencers or removing them can do the trick.  Fast flight strings can be very fickle.  Dacron seems to work over a larger spine range.

If I can find a 29-30" 2016 and not have to buy a dozen of them I would like to give that a try.  The string I have on now is a 14 strand dacron flemish string my first attempt.  Might try a commercial string to see if there is a difference there.  I havent tried a fast flight or dynaflight.  I have lowered the brace height to 6".  The recommended brace height is 6 1/2-7. I need to play around with the strike plate as well...lots to do just to get them to fly straight....chuck

I have 2 Martin Visions. A #50 and a #60. I shoot 2016's in the #50 and 2018's in the #60. Those are all 28" w/ a 125 grain field point. My 18 year old son is not drawing quite as far as I am and he uses 2016's & 2018's both when he shoots my #60.
When he shoots his #55 Montana he shoots 2016's w/ 125 grain points.

  Hope that helps,

Thanks Rusty I havnt figured out the problem.  The bow has been measured to my draw length (26 1/2"s)using either a 27 1/2 or 28" 2016 shaft.  I have used velcro to the arrow shelf and side plate, however, on the side plate it pushes my arrow to the left of the string about 1/4".  I have raised the side plate about 1/4" to get the arrow shaft closer to the riser and have same results.  I have done the match stick under the rug too.  This bow does like wood arrows.  My port oxford cedars have just come it and havent had a chance to try them yet.  The ones that I shot at the bow shop shot well out of my bow....I will keep trying....chuck

Chuck,
I built a longbow for myself not long ago that I tuned with a peice of silencer felt (roughly 1/32 of an inch thick).  Some of the rug rests today are very thick, and with longbows not being centershot, they tend to push the arrow way out from center. I get more consistent results using calf hair plates. The arrow resting left of center is perfectly normal with longbows and many recurves (for a right handed shooter).  My widow recurve tunes with 2117s and they sit out as you describe about a quarter inch.  A dacron string can usually require significantly less arrow spine.  It is also possible that your rest can have an arrow pushed so far out that it shows stiff regardless.  You might try a very thin peice of felt or sight window padding.  I've even used duck tape.

Thanks Turpentine.  I am going out to my property this weekend where I can shoot my bow at any yardage I want (that is what I am used to shooting anyway) I want to be able to shoot 20 yards without concern of the neighbors, my garage, etc.  I want to try to raise the arrow plate so that the shaft will be riding against the riser.  Or maybe, no plate at all.  I will give it a try
