Her first time shooting (pictures)
« on: July 05, 2007, 02:02:00 PM »
I took my Significant Other out for her first try at archery. She was shooting a Ben Pearson all-american recurve, 30# @28". I gave some instruction and we set the target at point-blank range and worked on her form. After we got that down, we moved the target out a bit for some serious shooting.

She did very well, had good form, and was hitting pie-plate sized groups from the outset. No stray shots on the left or right. Her windage was dead on. Most of her shooting was getting used to using the proper elevation depending on the yardage.

She continued to refine her form and her shooting really "dialed in". I've no doubts that she is going to be a good shot with a bow.

Your a lucky man to have a significant other that has an interest in shooting. I still hope my wife decides to try it one day.

Before we got her a recurve, she handled a 30# kid's compound to see what it was like. It wasn't her cup of tea.

After shooting a recurve she says the compound was "ugly, heavy, and had too many wangles, hoo has, doo dads, and crap on it".

The let-off to the compound also made it harder for her to pull back.

She is very happy with her recurve and said, "It's easy to pull back, light, and elegant."

She says she really enjoys the simplicity of the equipment and the finesse involved in proper shooting form.

Nice start and I hope she is a companion in life and shooting forever. I've lifted the FD pic and will post it soon on the TBD pages of my website (Page13). Pretty full weekend lined up, so not sure when, but could be today or tomorrow if I get some free time. Thanks for adding to the pages and sharing.

BTW, if you'll send (e-mail or PM), or post, a Full Draw pic of yourself and the bow stats, I'll slip you in beside hers.

Shamus-
You have every reason to be proud and happy!

There could be a downside you know.  My wife isn't interested in archery yet.  But she is a much better shot than me with BP revolvers!

You just  may  have created a monster!  Are you ready for the competition?!  :D

eddiejclayton,

glad to hear your GF is going shooting with you. The biggest thing I learned was to teach my SO in the way that worked best for her, and not the way I thought would work best. She told me exactly how best she learned and I that's what I did. She prefers a more hands-on approach.

@shamus

We did some preliminary stuff the other night and I found out that she was left eye dominant.  :(   So I ordered a left handed bow for her and dropped the weight a bit.  It's nice when your so takes an interest in the things that you like to do isn't it?
