Bruised Nose & Ripped Lips
« on: October 04, 2007, 05:16:00 PM »
Ok... maybe that's an exaggeration.  But I've been trying to use Terry Greene's suggestions on alignment, and I'm really having a tough time... slapping my face w/ nock & string.  I know I'm missing something, but don't really know anyone to show me what it is.  Does anyone else have this problem?
It seems like, in order to align my shoulders w/ target, I draw much further and my face (using nock point in corner of mouth) is turned too much toward perpendicular... and it gets in the way.  Quite comical for my wife, but it's a little more frustrating for me!!
This phenomena is a little difficult to explain, but I believe anyone who has had this problem would know what I'm talking about.
Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Hickory...part of proper alignment is aligning your face out of the way of the string!   :D

Seriously, you may be over correcting something...or your facial structure may not like your anchor point while in that position...that can happen when you change something else.  You may be leaving your face in the same place and not aligning it, and that fraction can cause you to hit your nose.

Hard to explain, but if you move your shoulders to be perpendicular, your bow arm will move in the opposite direction, as should  your face a tad so your are still looking down the arrow. ....this will lengthen your draw, but from the 'front end' not the rear end.

The goal is to get as close to a parallel plane with your arrow, shoulders, and power points(writs and elbow) as your body structure will allow.

Any way you can video your self?

Yup... Terry is right on. As my form got better I had to change my anchor point. Now I have better back tension an I don't hit my nose. My bow arm is rock solid now which makes up for a crappy release.  :)

I just went through this. JC pointed out I was probably overdrawing, which made me turn my head slightly into my anchor,  The result was that my  brass nock point was gouging the side of my nose bloody.

First thing I did was bag the brass nock points and started to use tie ins.  Even if I turned my nose in, a chunk of brass wasn't tearing it.

As far as the shooting, the solution was to shoot with a slightly lower wrist ( I was shooting with a quite high wrist), look at my target, and hold my head still as I came to a natural full draw and anchor.

It was as simple as that, no more gouged nose and hits to the right...
