Need A Starting Place (beginner)
« on: November 13, 2007, 01:55:00 PM »
Just started the Traditional venture and need some initial advise. I need some "best" approach method of obtaining the proper arrow combination for my bow. The bow is one of Ron La Clair's super shrews, LH, 46#@25", with my draw length this equates to 51#@26.25".  I am open to all types of arrow material (carbon, wood, alum, etc) I just want to ensure I head down the correct path to ensure my gear is correct to practice proper form ...basically want to get started correctly.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.....

I would talk to Ron and ask him what spine and length he would recommend. As far as materials go you need to shoot what you want. I like shooting wood. There is alot of data on Tradgang about different wood materials and their strengths and weaknesses. I would also call a reputable arrow maker and ask his advice and if you trust him go with his advice. I am a big believer in listening to the guys who have been doing this awhile. Check the sponsors of Tradgang.

Good luck,

Travis

Thanks Tvoskamp - Yep - Taking advice from the Tradgang and Ron is what my plan is. I've done alot of reading the last few weeks and I'm kind of indifferent on arrow material other than ensuring its durable and sufficently straight to allow me to grow "form" wise... being a starter and all... I appreciate your comments and look forward to reading additional posts....

A couple of arrow guys that I have talked to recently that have been extremly helpful is Bill as Allegheny Arrow woods, (www.arrowwoods.com) and Ted Fry at Raptor Archery. They both have really helped me a great deal in my setup.  I would call them and tell them what your setup is, what animals you are trying to hunt, and just ask their advice on what they might do, what broadheads they like and why, I have learned a great deal from their experiences.
